It helps to know I'm not alone. I had my first child at 19. Kayla is now 6. I had no problems at all with that pregnancy, other than I was too young. We were shocked to be pregnant since we always used condoms. My husband and I started trying to concieve when she was 2 1/2. After trying for 9 months, with no luck, I went to the doctor. He ran blood tests and said my progesterone level was 0.43. Basically non-existent.
He put me on Clomid and 3months later I was pregnant. I didn't need any drugs durring the pregnancy. Emma is now 18mths. I never went back on the pill. We decided if I get pregnant again that would be great, but figured I would need Clomid again to concieve. I got pregnant again on my own. However, I miscarried last week. I was 11wks pregnant but the baby had passed at 5wks. I needed a D&C. What I was wondering was whether I should have been on Progesterone Therapy while pregnant. They never checked my levels. But I feel it was probably the reason for the miscarriage, since they never found any problems with the baby. What do you think?

the more i have researched this whole progesterone thing, the more i realize this is a very controversial topic. some doctors don't believe that supplementation will help at all while others swear by it. many doctors check the hcg levels only and if they continue to go up, then you are having a good pregnancy. (of course in addition to songrams) i think our bodies know what they are doing!

Hi, I went to the doctor due to bleeding for one day it was very light and didnt last. Then i started having cramping, i went to the hospital and said they saw no heartbeat. My hormone level was like 46 something and now it went down to 43 but a yolk sack grew within one week. im sooo confused.

Becky - June 11th, 2005 1:39 AM

Jennifer-first of all I am sorry about the fear you must be feeling right now. How far along are you? Just because they saw no heartbeat doesn't mean that all hope is lost. If you say that you saw a yolk sac that wasn't there last time you looke then maybe it is still too early to see the embryo and its heartbeat right now. Did they say if their was an embryo yet? Anyways, your hormone level can also fall and still not indicate a misscarriage. That is why all of us are chatting on this board-because without our supplemental progesterone, our hormone level drops. One very good indication if the pregnancy is continuing is the HCG level. It should rise every day and never fall. This is the hormone that directly corresponds with your embryo and its growth so if it stops increasing then the embryo has probablly stopped growing. Ask your doctor about your HCG level from this visit-I am sure they did one. Hopefully it will help you understand more, what is happening and hopefully give you hope. Good luck.

Hello everyone-It has been a while since I posted and I just wanted to update everyone. I am now 26 weeks pregnant and besides 3 trips to the ER for pre-term labor, everything has been going good. My baby girl, her name is Elliyah, is growing wonderfully, her heartbeat has been good and fast and I am still taking the progesterone before bed. I just wanted to let everyone know that their is hope. If for any awful reason I went into labor now and they were not able to stop it, my baby would have a chance at survival so everyday she stays inside is another day I am so grateful for my doctor having prescribed me the progesterone. After all the misscarriages this is such a blessing. Anyways, I hope all of you are doing good-I pray for you each day. Take Care!

Angie M - June 13th, 2005 2:06 PM

Becky- I'm so glad all is well. You and Elliyah have been on my mind. I knew we were due close together. I'm now 29 weeks and all is going good. Never had any sickness and no swelling yet. I thank god for my progesterone suppliments every day. With out them I may not be where I'm at now. Keep in touch.

Becky - June 13th, 2005 8:22 PM

Angie-YEAH! I am so glad you are doing good also. Please keep me informed and let me know when the big day happens, okay.

sorry, the link did not work. this is what it said, it was a doctor responding to a patient's question about low progesterone.

Unfortunately, many women are led down this wrong path, receive the wrong treatment and ultimately suffer another miscarriage. Their physicians incorrectly decide that low progesterone -- the "pregnancy hormone" of which you speak -- was the culprit and promise that things will go better the next time if only you take enough progesterone. Research shows us that falling or low progesterone levels are a sign of a bad pregnancy and not the cause of pregnancy failure.
So first, you did not miscarry because the progesterone level was low. Let's blow this myth away and try to figure out why you have miscarried.

Although only 4 percent of all women will lose two pregnancies in a row, textbooks define recurrent pregnancy loss as three or more losses. Waiting for you to miscarry again before looking for the reason does not seem fair.

My evaluation would look for hormonal problems such as diabetes, thyroid, pituitary or ovarian abnormalities. I evaluate the effect that age plays on egg quality. Next, I consider infection, chromosomal abnormalities and structural defects in the uterus. And, finally, I look for immune disturbances that may interfere with normal growth and function of the placenta. This area is rapidly becoming the focus of much research, and physicians disagree on which tests are appropriate and what treatments are best able to treat this condition.

I am 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first pregnancy I did not have to take anything but a prenatal vitamin and now my Dr. prescribed Prometrium b/c my progesterone lvl is 10 and she wants to see it in the 20's. I am worried sick about the risks b/c I know Tylenol is not even reccomended during pregnancy! As I have researched this medication I feel alot better about having a progesterone supplement.Progesterone, as long as it is taken under medical supervision, has not caused any harm to the fetus in the studies I have read. Take a deep breath and believe in your body and have faith in Mother Nature doing her Miracle. That is all I can do too! email me for support it sounds like we are going through the same thing newlove212002@yahoo.com

Hi all, went to the doc again yesterday, Prog. went up to 24 and hcg is at 166,000 so the Crinone does work! My doc wants me on until 12th week and then hopefully the placenta will take over and I will be in for another 6 months! I am now 8 weeks, feels like 8 months already! :)

Sabrina - June 27th, 2005 10:41 AM

I went to get my progesterone level checked and it was 6.2 and I have to see a I/E doctor and I would like to know is that bad or good and what should I do next?

chevonne - June 27th, 2005 6:51 PM

Hi,

Sabrina, most docs like to see your progesterone between 10-20 (and that's typically during your luteal phase, after ovulation). I believe that is a similar level for very early pregnancy. I tested during my luteal phase at only 7.2 so they put me on prometrium, all natural progesterone. It is said to have no - effects on your body or possible fetus. It is FDA approved. You can take it orally or vaginally (follow doc orders). I take it vaginally and it causes a little dizziness and fatigue and a lot of creamy discharge (makes monitoring your cervical mucus pretty impossible). Many of the ladies on here obviously conceived w/ low levels of progesterone so there is hope. I'm due to have af tomorrow and am hoping for a + preg test instead! good luck to everyone.

I am six weeks pregnant , on my third pregnancy which I am hoping will be the charm because I have miscarried twice before. I have a doctor this time though before eight weeks, and she has put me on progesterone supplements. From what I have read, the supplements help support the lining of your uterus. Hopefully your baby and mine will be fine, and we need to think positively!

Shawn - June 28th, 2005 10:08 PM

I started on Progesterone Pills two weeks ago. According to my last cycle I should be 8 Weeks. I had an ultrasound today and they said that the sak is only measuring 6 weeks. Is this unusual? My doctor didn't seem to be alarmed. Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks

tonya - June 29th, 2005 6:42 AM

Shawn, Yes the same thing happened to me. I thought I was 8 or 9 weeks and the ultrasound said 6. My progesterone was very low so now I am on progesterone injections every day(ever try to give yourself a shot in the butt), it seems to be working. I am 12 weeks now and they want me on the progesterone until I am at least 18 weeks. i am hearing of progesterone pills and suppositories, believe me you guys are lucky.
