Hi, I'm Rebecca - this is my first post!

I'm 14w pregnant with my first baby. I had the screening test for the likelihood of Down Syndrome, and I just found out today that my baby is "high risk".

Apparently, for my age, the risk in my state is about 1/700. When I had the test (which consisted of U/S and blood test), they said that the number to remember was 1/300. If it was a bigger number than that, like 1/400 or 1/1000, it was considered low risk, and if it was smaller, it's high risk.

So I found out the number today, and it was 1/170. I'm scared now - I know that means that I could have this baby 169 times and it would *not* have Down Syndrome, but I can't help thinking that I'm going to have that "1" that does have it.

Has anyone been in this situation?

So that was the blood test? You could now do amnio or cvs to have a more accurate answer because those blood and ultrasound tests have a very high chance of FALSE POSITIVES.

Thanks, lisarenee... I've done some reading on the subject, and have found literally hundreds of people who were put in the high risk category and then a level 2 ultrasound indicated that nothing was wrong. And they ended up with perfectly healthy babies. I'm actually yet to find anything from someone who was told they were high-risk and then actually ended up with a baby with Downs.

This test is sooooo inacurate and scares alot of people needlessly. I have 3 friends and a cousin who were all put through this and everyone of the babies were fine. It cathes subtle indicators that MAY indicate Downs. Surley you will be one of the 169 that are not! Good Luck!

Because of human error I failed my triple screen and had a 1:75 chance and at the level 2 u/s everything showed up a ok but I still had to get an amnio done just in case. Well I had an appointment at a genetic councler an hour before my amnio and that is where they caught the mistake and I than had a 1: in 7500+ chance, something really high.

Hi all, I went to my GP and basically what I asked for was a higher-definition ultrasound performed by a better qualified technician. I had that done at a different place (in a bigger city) yesterday, and they made me feel much better. It was too late in the pregnancy to get another look at the nuchal translucency, but they looked at all the other organs and said they couldn't see anything indicating DS, but that it didn't rule out DS all together, just brought my risk down to 1:256, which is still considered "high". They recommended amniocentesis as well, and I had such faith in these practitioners that I decided to go ahead and get it done there instead of back at home. It wasn't too bad - it hurt a bit, but wasn't unbearable, and I had my mum there for support! I get the results in 2 weeks, along with the gender (exciting!!!). Thanks again for your help!

Hi, i live in the UK and i also came back high risk in my last pregnancy, i had to have an amniocentisis which to be blunt hurts like hell!! the risk of miscarriage in the UK is 1/100 after having this pprocedure, but i felt i needed it, I am glad i did, i would have swapped 2-3 days of worrying than most ofmy pregnancy, i was also told that if you fall when you are pregnant (which i did at 16 weeks) this can also prduce a high risk result! hope this helps and good luck
