I am in my first pregnancy and my doctor caught my incompetent cervix at 18 weeks. I had a cerclage put in the next morning. I am a little worried because I am not on strict bedrest. I had to quit my job but I am allowed to go out and walk around as I feel comfortable. I have cramping quite frequently which my doctor says is normal after a cerclage but cramping is also a sign of preterm labor. How do I know if I have having preterm labor. Also, he said no sex the remainder of pregnancy. Does this include orgasm or just intercourse? I was too embarrassed to ask him. Anybody who has had this that could give me any comfort I would really appreciate it.

Your best bet is to do as little as you need to. As for the sex orgasm can cause contractions which in turn can aggrivate the cervix and may cause it to start opening again tearing the stich. Intercourse can do the same thing but if you have started dilating then infection could cause a problem. Preterm labour is also often accompanied by bleeding or increased discharge, contractions (4 or more in an hour) which don't go with a change of position or from drinking and back ache. If you are worried go back in for another check. How far on are you now?

Thanks for your answer. I am 21 weeks today. I see my doctor every two weeks but in between that time I worry like crazy about every cramp I feel. My doctor told me cramping and increased discharge are normal after a cerclage has been placed and I will have that the rest of the pregnancy. From what I hear, the procedure is usually really successful.

I have an incompetent cervix, but unfortunately it was not caught in time so to say and I delievered my son at 22 weeks. You will know your in lobor. I had lost my mucous plug and began contractions about 4 hours later. By the time the doc looked at me my membrane was coming through and I had to deliver my son. Good luck on your cerclage..let me know how it goes because I will have to have one for every pregnancy I have.
