I had a miscarriage on March 26th (5w5d) and my doctor never even brought up having a D&C done. I'm not sure if you have to be past a certain date for one to be required. Does anyone else know?

Sorry for your loss. No, you do not have to have a DNC unless your body doesn't expell the tissue after several weeks or doesn't at all. If you know you've miscarried the dr. will usually let it happen naturally unless it takes too many weeks. the longer the tissue remains the greater chance for infection. In jan 07, i went in for my 10 week scan for the HB but none was found. my bean stopped growing at 6 1/2 weeks. i had no signs of miscarriage and my body did not realize the bean was lost so I had to have a dnc to remove it since my body wasn't going to. It was the hardest thing I've ever been thru. baby dust to all!!

I think usually a D&C is done if there is still matter left in the uterus...Im sure you will get an ultrasound that will tell that. A D&C will prevent infection if there IS matter still left, otherwise if everything shows up normal your doctor may have you wait to see IF nature takes it course. I had a miscarriage at the beginning of feb and the best thing i think is to let nature take its course and then have a check up once you stop bleeding, they normally work out well.

I also m/c at 6w6d. My doc suggested letting nature take it's course. The problem with a d&C is that it can cause scratching and scarring inside your uterus. He said the early pregnancy will end much like a regular period and perhaps even lighter if you're used to heavier ones.. That's good since I was concerned about seeing tissues and matter. (I also had an empty u/s). I had asked for a D&C to speed up the process. He seemed to think naturally was the easiest way on my system and there wasn't a need to start digging unless my body wasn't shedding as it should.
