I had a D&C at 10 weeks after the doctors weren't able to find a fetus after two ultrasounds prior to that (intravaginal at 7 weeks, abdominal at 8 weeks). They recommended that I have it at 8-9 weeks, but I waited until the beginning of the 10th week. There was a gestational sac in the uterus, one mild episode of bleeding, and HCG levels were 160,000. They took out the tissue and sent it out to a pathology lab. They said they found normal fetal tissue and nothing more. Can the lab determine if there was a chance that the doctors were wrong and that there really was a baby? Also, any chance that a fetus cannot be seen at 8 weeks? Also, they later found fibroids during a laparoscopy (there were complications during the D&C), and I'm wondering if those may have someone masked the fetus in the ultrasound.

Since they did 2 ultrasounds from two different angles, it should show everything in your uterus, especially with the intravaginal one. Since it just has to pass the image thru the cervix, not the uterine walls and abdominal cavity, it should give a very good look at the space inside the uterus. I had a normal u/s at 6 weeks and you could definitely see the baby and the heartbeat. (no heartbeat at 15 wks followed by d/c). Its not uncommon for the fetal tissues to start growing, but not form a baby like it should. I'm so sorry for your loss!

No, you are right. The baby is removed in a d&c.

I am so sorry for your loss! I lost my first pregnancy too at 15 wks on 2/9/05. I was a little scared before my d/c but it was really quick and you're asleep for the whole thing. There's some bleeding and crampy afterwords, but they give you good drugs that help both. I felt a lot better physically and emotionally after my d/c. I felt like couldn't really deal with the death of my baby while it was still carrying it. Be good to yourself these next few weeks. I will be thinking of you monday.

yeah, I should have said that too- the procedure (I had the d&e thought) wasn't bad. I didn't know a thing, woke up after and really wasn't in too much main- drugs after were good :) I was up and around- though NOT overdoing it too much in 2 days. Bled lightly for 4.
