Diet and lifestyle changes may lower infertility risk
Women who followed at least five specific lifestyle and behaviors including diet, weight, and exercise were about 69% less likely to have infertility from disorders of ovulation than women who followed none of these, a new study concludes. Researchers tracked 17,544 women in the Nurses Health Study II for eight years and found that the highest fertility scores were linked to eating less trans fat and simple sugar, consuming more protein from vegetables than from animals, ingesting more fiber, and taking more multivitamins and iron. Having a lower body mass index (BMI), exercising for longer periods every day, and, surprisingly, eating more high-fat dairy products as opposed to low-fat dairy products also helps. Researchers found that women's risk of infertility dropped significantly with each strategy undertaken, regardless of their age or whether they had been pregnant before.
