I have a question, or really grasping for some hope, to anyone out there who may have experienced anything similar. In June of 2005 I found out I was pregnant, didnt plan it or expect it. However come to find out I had a blighted ovum- found out 13 weeks into. So the doctor let my body naturally take care of it instead of doing a D&C. After the miscarriage my husband and I desperately wanted a child and started trying again in Jan. of 2006. (New Year - Good LuCK RIGHT?!?) Well we were lucky in the sense that we concieved immeadiately, that week to be exact, of trying. Everything was going perfectly. The doctor made sure to try and ease my mind by doing a sonogram very early. (He is so wonderful) We got to see the heartbeat at 6 1/2 weeks. It was the most amazing thing, my husband and I both cried. When I was 15weeks the doctor saw something worong with our baby- a cystic hygroma. He sent us to a specialist, got the tests run. Come to find out our baby had Turner's syndrome. We were devistated to say the least. We had to make the decision choose to terminate or continue on with the pregany knowing the survival rate not being good. I choose to carry on, I couldnt give up on our baby. The doctor did careful monitering to make sure she did not pass away inside of me. I thought she would make it to the end, as naive as it sounds I really did. We went in for our last sonogram were we saw that our poor baby had been taken over by this hygroma. It looked like she was wearing a space suit. So I made the decision to have them induce me to end her suffering. I carried her until I was 28 weeks when they induced me- memorial day. The whole experience was horrible, 3 days of induving and finally had our baby on June 1st. She was alive when I delivered her. We held her and loved on her. It was horrible, horrible.
W e were devistated, I immeadiately wanted to be tested for everything- genetic testing, hormone, thyroid, you name I got it. I thought there had to be somethign wrong with me for 2 things to happen like this. My husband never went in for his testing since the genetic counselor said there was no need. Aparently what happened is a fluke thing and it would happen again. All of this proved to hard, and my husband and I sepereated, went to counseling and now have gotten back together. The stress of loosing our first baby proved to be too much for us to deal with. We decided to cremate her since we do not know yet where we want to be burried and I want her with me.
Now it is another new year, with what would have been our baby's first birthday quickly approaching. We decided we shall try again. Although very, very nervous as to what will happen next. Our poor doctor is very assuring that this wont happen again and he will monitor us closely to ease my mind. So with this decision made, my started trying. Then nothing, I stopped ovulating. So the doctor has put me on clomid, this is the first month, so we shall see.
But here is my question to you all. Is there anyone else out there who has gone through anything realted? I need to hear someone else's story and hear there success. I am a wreck!!! Please !

First off i want to tell you how sorry i am for your loss! I am 22 and went through almost the samething! My baby also had a cystic hygroma! It was found at 13wks! It was horriable!! We were told that we would have less then 10% of the baby making it to full term! I went to a specialist, and i was told to come back in 3 weeks.. that he said it looked like it might go away!! When i went in 3wks my baby was dead! I was induced and delivered! I was told that this would not happen again!! You have less then 1% of this happening again! Its a mutation fluke! VERY VERY RARE!!! My doctor has only seen 2 in 25 years!! This happened to me almost 2wks ago! I am sure that this is not going to happen!! You can carry, it was just a fluke!! You will be fine!! I get results back from the baby tom. morning! So just keep your faith up, you will have a healthy baby soon :)!!

Thank you so much Brook F. for your encouraging words. I am so sorry for your loss too. We were told the same grim news of less than 10% survival rate. I can not believe this all happened to you only 2 weeks ago. Are you doing ok?

Brooke F - March 20th, 2006 5:54 PM

cmarie, I am doing well! I dont know your religion, but i think of it this way : God knew that i was going to keep this child no matter what the issue was.. and he wanted my hubby and i to have a healthy baby! So he is watching over her! My bleeding has stopped and my pregnancy test came out neg!! Which that means my levels are less then 15 hcg!! So i am hoping for my AF in the next two weeks :) and my hubby and i know this one is going to be healthy! My doctor told me that i can carry to term, it was the baby that was sick, and was more then likely not going to make it! So knowing this isnt going to happen again gives me tons of strength to try again! I put everything in Gods hands.. Knowing he wouldnt give us something we couldnt handle! I would try to stay calm and have fun ttc again!! Did they do any testing on the baby?? I am just waiting on my results! I will get them in the morning during my check up :)
Good luck to you!

good luck at your doctors appt today! Let me know how is goes. I agre with your way of thinking, I dont think God would put something like this in our lap again. And through this I have realized not to take anything for granite... Good things dont come easy ?!? They did not do testing on our baby once she was born. When I went to the specialist I got a CVS and thats how they determined she had Turner's Syndrome.

Brooke F - March 21st, 2006 2:20 PM

Well it turns out that my baby had lots of stuff wrong! Cleft lip.. and some other things.. The cystic hygroma killed him! IT was a BOY :( we thought it was a girl! He told me that i would have a 10% chance of anything happening to my next pregnancy! Did your doctor tell you if you got pregnant again that they recommended a amino?? just wondering! But told me that i could bd now :) hubby is happy.. and to try when i was ready! Thanks for your concern :)

cmarie - March 21st, 2006 4:14 PM

A little boy! Doesnt it make you feel better to know. Our doctor told us we could get the amnio as soon as possible to eleviate any fears. I am sure that is what your doctor it going to do it for as well. It makes me feel better- all the assurance I can get at this point! Good news on the clear to ttc again!! I am sure this will be our time! We are both young, you 22 and me 27, we have plenty of time. Lots of luck!!!

Brooke F - March 21st, 2006 4:30 PM

Thank you! My doctor recommended us to get the amino done when we got pg again! but i am sure that we will be just ok! Good luck to you! If you like, you can join a few ladies on ttc for jan or feb babies :) Good luck to you :)

First I would like to say how sorry I am for your loss. I am currently in the middle of my second m/c, not as far along as you were but it hurts none the less and I feel for you. I pray you will be holding your healthy baby in your arms very soon. I was wondering if I could ask you a question, if you know did the cystic hygroma cause the Turner's syndrome or did the Turner's cause the cystic hygroma? The reason I ask is because my daughter had a cystic hygroma but she was about 18 months old when we found it. It was in her neck and was removed by surgery. The doctor said he couldn't tell me why she got it and really she could get it at anytime again. Well she is 8 now and never got it again. There were things in her health that I noticed before it was removed which didn't come back but now she has different health issues that we can't find a reason for. I was just wondering what you have found out medically about the hygroma.

cmarie - March 22nd, 2006 3:15 PM

Angela Mac- Thank you for your prayers, same for you right now. I am terribly sorry to hear what you are going through. It is a difficult tiem for you I am sure. The doctor told me that a cyctic hygroma in a fetus is related to a genetic abnormality. It was after we saw the hygroma that we went in for testing and found out it was Turner's Syndrome. However, after birth I dont know if they are related. When I did research on Turner's I found that symptoms are usually short in stature, thick or webbed neck, some have heart problems. But I honeslty do not think that since she had a hygroma this is the case. I hope this helped.

cmarie and brooke i know how you both feel,i was to pg with my 1st but on the 9th jan 06 went to have my scan and was told my baby had died and there was not heart beat, i gave birth to her on the 11th jan 06 at 22 wks, she was so small but well formed, we too had her cremated i called her Kayleigh anne, i would have been due on the 19th may 06 but instead i have a hospital appointment on the 15th may to tell me why and how my baby died and if i have any problems i know its nearly 4mths since i gave birth and i have to wait thats england GB for you so slack. i found talking on these threads that has help me a lot, i had my DDs name tattoo on my back so she will be with me forever, i will never forget her and when i have another i will tell them about her. at the moment i am have my "o" wk so i will TTC this wk hopefully i will fall on. if not i wil keep trying untill it happens. i wish you both the best of luck and hope you both find comfort on this forums as i have. I'm so sorry for your loss!! I just had a D&C yesterday due to a cystic hygroma...I was 10 weeks. I had an US sound at 7 weeks and heard the heartbeat and everything was fine, however, at 9 weeks for my second US the Dr saw the fluid on the back of the baby's neck and sent me to a specialist the very next day and he confirmed that it was a cystic hygroma and it was a good size one but he said about 60% are caused by chromosomal abnormalities and that sometimes they can resolve on their own!! We were terrified because I've already had one miscarriage at 8 weeks and it was happening again!! We hoped and prayed everything would be alright...The Dr scheduled me for a chorion villa sampling(CVS) which would show anything abnormal, it's usually done in the 1st trimester and is similiar to an aminio which is done later in the 2nd trimester!! I went in Wed for the test and they did the US and the baby was dead no heartbeat so yesterday I had my D&C and I feel that GOD made the decision for US...It doesn't make it any easier though...It's still a huge loss in your Life!! Once I found out my baby had a cystic hygroma, I wanted to know everything there is to know about it!! Why was it happening to me!! They are very common, 1 in 200 pregancies and the perinatal specialist I went to said he sees about 2 a week!! They are usually significant of some chromosomal abnormality usually a trisomy 21(Down's), 18 or 15 and usually Turner's syndrome which ofen times is picked up in the 2nd trimester. Everything that I have read doesn't give a good prognosis but there is that hope that it will resolve on it's own and some do!! It is also extremely rare 1% of it happening again in any other future pregnancies!! If you have any other questions about cystic hygroma email me at JenDuck@hotmail.com or if anyone just wants to talk about what they went through...I'd love to hear from you...Your in my thoughts and prayers...JENNY XXOO
