sex in first weeks? - March 25th, 2005 10:45 AM

Hi can anyone advise. I had a m/c some months back. Now Im going to try again soon. I've read that its recommended to avoid sex in first couple of months of preg if have had a m/c to be on safe side. My question is, if this is true how do you know when to stop as you wouldn't know you were preg until you were already 4 weeks probably so how would you avoid sex in the first few weeks cos you wouldn't know. (sorry if Im not explaining v well here) I know avoiding sex prob would make no difference as I dont reallt think its anythin to do with the m/c we have but just wandered anyway. thank you.

I have heard mixed opinions about this. I believe that it is recommended that you stop having intercourse, or consult your doctor, if after you have sex, you spot or bleed. It does not make sense that intercourse would cause a miscarriage, but I suppose there could be some instances where it could?? My doctors have told me that most m/c are due to chromosomal abnormalities, and not due to external factors. I personally have mixed feelings about this. Blaming external factors can give you unnecessary guilt (if only I had not had that glass of wine before I knew I was pregnant, or was it the raw fish . . . ) when it was not YOUR fault, and there was nothing you could have done differently. On the other hand, it is good to try to be as healthy as possible, and if there is a way to avoid a miscarriage, of course we will try anything. Sorry if this seems to long and preachy!
