My husband has an mildly autistic son from a previous marriage. I have two healthy boys. I would love to have another child, "our child", but he is "totally freaked" with the idea that he may have another autistic child. Any ideas for me? Any one heard of any pre-testing? Thanks

From what I understand, there is no autism screening available. However, it is unusual for autism to appear in more than one sibling in a single family. Not impossible, but unsual (less than 5% probability, from what I've read). You shoud speak with a genetic counselor (your OB should be able to refer you to one) if this is still a major concern to you and your husband.

Hi Tammie I work for a family that have two Autistic children, four total. I would reccomend a book for you to read that may give you a plan to prevent as much as possible.
the book is called (What your docyor may not tell you about childrens vaccinations) of course if we knew what caused it for sure we wouldnt do it but is believed that the mercury in vaccinations and else where plays a huge role in people who are naturally predisossed to autism. Let me know if there is anything else i can do.

My 2nd son has suspected autism and any medical professional that has seen him suspects autism as well but I have to get him properly diagnose. But my 1st son and daughter are perfectly fine.

Thanks for all of the responses! We did see a genetic counselor. Based on our history our chances for a healthy baby are around 93%. My husband is still freaked. His son is high functioning. He is in boy scouts and talks and fusses just like all kids. Now he can be a little odd but I quess we all have our issues. All of the testing done on is son has showed no connects to genes - fraigle x carrier ect. Of couse, the tests are not complete or we would have a cause or at best a starting point. I tend to think he was just predisossed to the disorder and the vaccinatins did not help. If you look at his baby pictures he looks just like any other kid but by three you could see a more blank look. We are still trying to sort through - our own or do we adopt. If any one hears any more news please post! MANY THANKS!
