Birth Control Expired- Why I Missed My Period?

I just realized that the birth control pills i've been taking have expired (back in April). i asked a pharmacist and she said that they are still "90% effective" even after they expire but can effect your cycle. I am over a week late on my period (never happened before). I have taken HPTs and a blood test and they are negative for pregnancy. I am wondering if it's b/c the pills were expired. Anyone else expereienced this?
