I am awaiting the results of a blood test I had yesterday and just looked at the paperwork and realized they ordered a qualitative blood test and not a quantitative one. Is one better than the other? I know that a qualitative hCG test detects IF hcg is present in the blood, while a quantitative hCG test (or beta hCG) measures the AMOUNT of hcg actually present in the blood. As you can tell, I am hoping for a positive, but didn't know if I should request that both tests be run. What does everyone think? Thanks for the advice :-)

I wonder why they didn't do a qualitative? It wouldn't hurt to ask the doc. Baby dust to you and I can't wait to hear your results!

HappyinArizona- I too just had blood work done this week...on Wednesday and again today on Friday. Both time the doctor and paperwork requested qualitative (yes or no) first. When the nurse called me, she said once the first test came back "Weak Positive" the lab would use my same blood sample and give them the quantative result. The same thing the second test, the paper work said Qualitative, and when it showed Hcg, they requested the actual numbers. I wasn't even late for AF until today. I am thrilled to say my Hcg's had TRIPLED in two days and I am definately pregnant! I think the reason dr's do not request the more in depth (quantitatiave) might be a matter of cost if the person was not pregnant. Once they get a yes, it would be worth the expense on their side to do the second test.
I am about 4 weeks! One other thing...I had 5 positive HPT's and still got a nagative urine test at the dr, the same day I got the "weak positive" blood resutl. Two days later it definate! So be patient and still hold out hope if early negatives.
First Response early detection test showed positive for me 5 days early, and the lines got darker and darker every day. Even when the doctor's test said Negative. Good Luck!

HappyinArizona- You are welcome. I am learning everything as I go, as most people do I guess. I am glad I saw your post, as we had the same questions. I am currently waiting for lab results that show progesterone level, as a precautionary measure. Waiting for lab results is so hard!
I hope your tests came back with good news.
Sending Baby Dust Your Way!

Update: My progesterone level is normal.
So, there is nothing more that can really be monitored or checked...just have to wait 6 weeks until my next appointment. Good Luck Everyone!
Be patient and trust in God. He is the only one in control, and he never gets worried or anxious. What a relief because I sure do! :-)
