1st Trimester Prenatal Screening Vs. AFP Results

Hi there - When I was pregnant with twins, my AFP came back normal, but one twin had a white spot on his heart and a dilated kidney. My age was 33 and since it was a twin pregnancy, the risk of Downs was put (around) 1 out of 119. It was pretty scary and we opted for the amnio. The results came back fine. The twins are now 14 months and both are great! The spot on the heart is relatively common, especially given the improved ultrasounds they have nowadays. Is your "bad report" that you are referring to the ultrasound? If so, yes, I had a bad ultrasound and a good AFP (which is actually pretty unreliable when it is twins) and everything worked out OK! |

Hi there. I had my 4th baby back in Jan 2008. I was 38 at the time. My screening for Ds came back at 1/22!! I was really upset. I decided NOT to do the amnio as it does come with a miscarriage rate. I prayed and prayed about it for peace and started out on the longest wait of my life! I had 22 weeks to go! I saw a fetal medicine speciallist who did in depth scans and looked for markers. I ended up having her via c-section (my others were all sections aswell) and she was perfect! No DS at all. During my waiting period though I hung onto my faith and just knew either way it would be good. Different but good. So, she was born just fine even with a score of 1/22. I learned that these positive screenings are often more indicative of a placental problem than DS. I would strongly recommend that you see a fetal medicine dr who will perforn a ultrasound that measures your placental blood flow and takes a closer look at your placental. Google placental issues and false postive prenatal screenings and you will see a direct link. Placental problems are the cause of preeclampsia and stillbornness. Anyhow, hopefully neither are your issue and the test results are just off. blessings. |
