I have a flight booked to go to Florida in two days for 5 days. I live in Toronto..the flight is around 4-5 hours. I had some light spotting about a week ago which has subsided. I had an ultrasound last week and saw the heartbeat and yolk sac. I have not told too many people about this pregnancy because I had a lost my last pregnanct at 13 weeks 6 days back in Dec 22/05 the heart stopped beating. My question is..Does anyone know if flying can harm the fetus in the first trimester? Or is there any reason I should not fly...can flying or pressure induce a miscarrige? I am nervous but I feel great, mind you I felt great last time as well and I lost the baby. Any thoughts, knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kristin :)

hello kristin.
just my own experience i flew from overseas in my 9 th week (about 20 hrs of flight) next day i had some spotting and cramps. although it subsided in a day and I fine in my 13th weeks but I won't do it again. My cramps started in flight when I was still 6 hrs away from my destination. there is no place to lie down and relax and no immediate medical help if you need.

Thanks sandee..I am still considering flying..but do you know why it could cause problems or spotting? I have not been able to find info or reasoning behind it.

I just got word from my doctor that after looking over my ultrasound results he found that everything was fine. He feels that I should be ok to travel and he gave me the green light to go. Thanks for the responses. If there was clinical evidence suggesting great risks i would definitely reconsider this. I have not been able to find any.
Wish me luck anyway..

Hi there, I have been told as well that you are allowed to fly but when I did at 10 weeks with my first pregnancy I got spotting although the dr said it probably wasn't related but never did find a cause. I also live on the outskiirts of Toronto. My doc is at Mount Sinai. Good luck

P.S For a 4to5 hour flight does that mean you are going up and down twice for a stop over. usual flights there are only 3 hours?

1 stop on the way there and on the return :)
