1moremom - I have another question - I can not recall. After the diagnosis, while you were pregnant, did you have any additional follow-up on the EIF, u/s etc.?

1moremom- congrats on the healthy baby girl. They did all the same tests on my little one as they did on yours. I think those are all pretty routine tests even with babies that don't have abnormal ultrasounds. I know they did all those with my other kids as well and they had normal ultrasounds. I am so happy for you. Enjoy your little one. I am certainly enjoying mine even though he kept me up all night last night :) Gretchen

Palegreestar and momsmom - Thanks for posting as well! It's such a great relief the more and more baby stories we hear that everything is fine and we are all worrying for nothing :)

As for me, lots of braxton hicks starting up but nothing consistent or "true labor" contractions. They are so sporatic and just meh....lol! But I know it's my body getting ready for "the big day" so I'll suck it up and deal with them! I have a feeling this little one is coming early though. I have just over 2 weeks left before my due date, but the full moon is on March 10th so maybe baby will be born then! If you believe in that sort of thing....which I don't know that I do....but I think I'll believe in anything that says baby will be here a little bit earlier! haha!

1moremom - Yay and congratulations! I have been anxiously waitiing for you to post! I couldn't be happier for you. I was having a sad day but just hearing your news is making it a good day! Thank you soo much for posting your news and letting us know all the checks they did on your little girl! You must be so relieved and happy to put all these feelings behind you. All the good baby news of late has really lifted my spirits. I have 12 weeks to go and now I feel like I have so much to do that maybe being so busy that I wont have time to think about EIF's and all of this junk!

Hi, I'm 32 years old, 20 weeks pregnant with my second baby. From the beginning I was sent to a high risk pregnancy doctor b/c of other hormonal issues I have.

I had normal blood results at 11 weeks (1 in 6700 and 1 >10,000 for Down's and Trisomy respectively) . This blood work was done by my high riskpreg. doctor.
Around 16 weeks, my ob-gyn sent me for blood work which also included the test for Down's which came out positive (1 in 265). One morning I got a call from my ob-gyn's office asking me to pre-pone my U/S and get it done ASAP, I was devastated spent most of my day crying until I wnt to the U/S next day. Everything went fine and they said everything looks normal. But they asked me come back after 2 weeks as they needed to check the heart around 20 weeks gestation.
During my next visit they found calcium deposit on the heart and that increased my risk to 1 in 100.
I'm terrified and I definitely don't want to go for an amnio. My doctor was so positive that he said off the record he didn't suggest me to go for an amnio.

Confused mom - we are all right there with you. I refused the amnio and had no other bloodwork done so the only thing I have to go on is my age (30 now) and the echogenic focus. My doctor seems really positive but I am scared to death of being the "one" as you said. I'm really confused how they actually came up with your odds of 1/100. The bloodwork results of 1/265 should have been combined with your previous bloodwork for an adjusted risk number. Even with the echogenic focus at the most your results should be cut in half. My doc thinks that is too much though. What he told me that based on my age my odds are about 1/900 and now with the focus they are about 1/600 or 700 so just slightly lower and not cut in half. Really though I feel that all these numbers mean squat. There have been women who have had perfect numbers and u/s and had babies with down syndrome and women with really bad numbers who have healthy babies. I know that probably doesn't make you feel any better but it is a reality we all have to face. Chances are things are okay and the numbers/odds are really in our favor. In a few weeks you won't feel as "insane" about things, it will still be difficult but you will start having better days. It is a shocker to hear the words soft marker, but as time goes on it gets slightly easier to deal with. It is always on my mind at some point during the day but I don't have my days of crying anymore. I hope you'll stick with us and read all the positive stories about women having healthy babies. 1moremom just had a healthy baby girl and she had a risk of 1/80!

Thank you steffie92s !! I'm gonna check with my doctor next time why the numbers were not adjusted accordingly.

There is nothing I could do at this point except for praying and hope that we all end up having wonderful and HEALTHY babies.

wannalil1- while pregnant I did have the EIF looked at again and again. As I was a high risk patient (not just because of age but because of bi-cornuate uterus) I had frequent u/s. The spot showed up almost always. As my baby got bigger it seemed to disappear but doc said it could still be there and just not show up as well b/c she was so big at a certain point. It is my assumption (and my doc's) that it was always there.
Gretchen you're right that all the tests they did on my girl were the same tests they do on all babies, not just babies with EIF, etc.. They didn't do anything extra for her. I spoke to my doc about extra tests and he said not necessary. I spoke to my baby's doc about extra tests, he also said not necessary. Then, I asked nurse about extra tests and she said not necessary. As we have been told (but have a hard time believing until we see our little ones) the EIF is common and not a problem in and of itself. Evidently not even a problem when coupled with other things such as my low blood scores, etc.
Ohmuffin- I know it's frustrating to get the braxton hicks and hope that it is labor only to find out it's not. We've all been on pins and needles so long it's hard to wait for the little things to come out. You are SOOOOO close though so I'll hope for you that it comes soon and look forward to hearing all about it.
Lipstick- my brother is due around the same time as you and he is so anxious as well. 12 weeks is a while but getting closer :)
Lastly, confusedmom- I'm sorry to hear about your scare but please try to enjoy as much as you can. We all know the worry of being "the one" and the low scores don't help. If it makes you feel better there is a girl (not sure if it was this blog or another one I read) that had a 1/2 chance of downs. She had a perfectly healthy baby. If you can wait and not do the amnio, I think it's a good decision. Although a very personal one and there is no right or wrong. I am just positive that everything will be perfect with you and your baby though and the risk of problems with U/S is much higher than your risk of downs. Try not to get caught up in the numbers game. It is a mind trip.

Hello everyone..I am 23 years of age and found out yesterday that my baby has an ethnogenic foci spot on his heart. As all as you have heard, this is a soft marker for DS however; it's poses no huge threat. I am concerned deeply but mine also stems from previous losses. I lost my first baby at 22 weeks...and my second at 5 weeks. My husband is currently deployed and I am 21 weeks preg. with a baby boy tomorrow. Reading all of your comments has soothed my heart more than anyone else. I came home thinking I was going to hole myself up in my room for the next 19 weeks, but found a reason to stay strong and carry on.My fear just goes so much deeper with my previous losses....

I'm not sure what tests my maternal fetal doctor were referring to yesterday but they said they came back normal with a 1 in 5000 chance of DS, and with the ethnogenic spot it dropped to 1 in 2700...I don't know if this is a normal range..because I see such a a variety of numbers on here. Some one is three hundred and others one in ten thousand. I guess my question is what are the normal ranges...??

marinewife - You found the right place to come on and talk! Read through all of the posts and you will honestly not read one negative outcome related to this sole marker. So many doctors have commented that they've never seen a baby born with DS with just an EIF and they wish that they didn't have to tell us, but thanks to this wonderful day and age, if they don't, they run the risk of being sued. Also, equipment now is sooooo sensitive that it picks up the littlest things, which could be as simple as the way the heart is growing at the time. So many different explanations but not a single one that pinpoints the exact reason for the EIF. To be honest, I don't think they even know what it is! lol! Which is always very very helpful!!!!
There are a lot of us women and men on here who are going through the same thing, so you truly aren't alone! You'll find you might be a little down for the first couple of weeks, but you can honestly move past this.
If you have facebook, you should add yourself to the group that steffi created....you have to add her as a friend first (you'll find her e-mail either on this page or the previous one), then she can invite you to the group. We thought this would be a great way to exchange pictures of our HEALTHY little ones when they are born....mine is due in just over 2 weeks.....two LONG weeks! haha!
Keep your chin up and know that you have people to talk to here! You'll see....it's all going to be great in the end!
Oh and to answer your question, your numbers seem really good. Everyone has different numbers based on age, etc. Because you are younger, your numbers will look better than someone over the age of 35. What your numbers are saying is that you basically have a 0.03% (roughly) chance of having a baby with DS. But to take the optomists approach (which I tend to do...lol) this also means that there is a 99.97% chance that your little baby boy is completely healthy! Take care of yourself, rest and relax!
