[Original Post]

I work in a bar 3 nights a week for 5 hours at a time where there is smoking. I just found out I am pregnant (5 weeks). I had suffered a missed miscarriage at 13 weeks 6 days only 3 months ago. They were unable to determine the reason for my non viable pregnancy which was quite advanced. I'd like to mention I was working at the bar though that pregnancy as well. I had chromosome testing after the fact on the fetus and everything including my tests came back fine. I am well aware of the adverse effects of smoking on an unborn fetus and do not want to put this baby at risk. My question to anyone is do they think I should quit this job? Or do you think the 15 hours a week is not detrimental to this pregnancy. I'd also like to mention I am very healthy otherwise and I take great care of myself and DO NOT SMOKE!! But I make great money at this job :( Should I get out before it hurts my baby?

Hi Kristen,
15 hours does seem to be quite a bit of second hand smoke and I know those bars can sometimes be quite smokey. Because you have had a miscarriage before where the reason was undetermined and not chromosomal I would at least take some time off until you're out of the "danger time", until you're through the first trimester. If you can financially swing it (I know a lot of people can't), quit altogether and try to find a job where smoking is not allowed. I know this is a very hard decision, and you must be very scared for your baby, but 15 hours a week in a very hazardrous environment could have not just short term effects but also long term effects on your child. I wish I could be of more help.

Betul, Thankyou for your reponse. I am definitely going to reconsider this job. It is really upsetting they allow smoking at my job, this is Canada and there is suppose to be a no smoking law in effect. The owners of this establishment are "willing to take the risk of being fined" Ironically, the owner just had a heart attack he is only 34 and was a heavy smoker you'd think they'd get the picture I also work as a model but the work is not steady and I will obviuosly not be able to work much after 3-4 months. But there are other jobs without smoke..maybe less money but it will be worth it if my pregnancy goes to term..Again thankyou so much for pointing those things out!

I was going to ask you where you lived because I live in NY and we also have a no smoking law but they are pretty strick about it. What a shame, 34 years old (so young!) and a heart attack. God forbid anything happened to you or anyone else in his employment due to the smoking...what a lawsuit! It is amazing some of the risks business owners will take in the name of profit! Maybe someone should make an anonymous phone call to the authorities and let them know this bar is breaking the law! I am wishing you the best of luck and hope you find a position in a better environment! Keep me posted and good luck :)

Thanks Betul, After spreaking with my father and considering your note I have decided this will be my last weekend there. It really is not worth the risk of endagering my baby. I went through enough pain with my last loss. I just want to feel I am doing everything humanly possible to stay healthy for this baby. Also, funny enough I was just looking at the by-laws in Toronto. I am considering making the anonomys call!! P.S.I was wondering are you expecting as well? If you are how far along are you and how is it going? If you are, have you had any prenatal screening tests, ultrasounds etc.? Thanks again for you response. Kristin :)

Kristin.. Hi.. sorry to just peek in here and comment. I live close to TO and I can't believe your soon to be ex-boss allows smoking. You mentioned blowing the whistle. While I was reading this I thought, boy she should report it. Let him pay the fine girl !!! I think you made a wise decision in quiting. I'm sure you'll find something else. Sorry about your miscarriage and good luck with your new pregnancy! Sorry for intruding on your thread!

Suebee, Thanks for your comment. You see the smoking police do come by on a daily occurence. Yet if they get fined the club just pays it and that's it. I think the club get's fined $2000 and it is $200 for individual fines. They put up no smoking signs,no ashtrays, and their excuse is that they just can't enforce it completely. When the smoking police come in our security radio around to have people put out the cigarettes until they leave. It is completely ridiculous. I have one weekend left and I can't help but thinking I am putting my baby at risk. But I know I am making the right dicision! As of today I am going on my 6th week! I just pray everything still goes well. Thanks agian!

OMG.. that is ridiculous!! I can't believe it. Well, at least you're getting out of there. They obviously make alot of money for them not to care about fines. Just think, in the long run, you'll be healthier, you won't stink of smoke and you'll breathe better and of course most importantly, you're baby will love you for it!! Good luck and I have NO doubt that you'll have a fantastic pregnancy this time around. You'll be a great mom. You're already doing the best for your baby!!

HI Kristen,
yes, I am expecting too! I am going to be 12 w tomorrow...yeah, one more week and I 'll be out of the first trimester. I am going to be 39 next week and I have opted for no prenatal screening. I had the regular tests and ultrasounds and will have the big ultrasound when I m 20 weeks but nothing invasive. I dont want to spend my pregnancy a nervous wreck waiting for test results that have a high incidence of false positives. I had my last son when I was 35 and opted for no extra tests..he is a fine, healthy 3 and half year old. This is my 6th pregnancy (I have 5 sons, ages 19, 16, 14, 13, 3) and we are all secretly hoping for a girl but of course would love another boy too! This is my second marriage, my 4 older boys father passed away and my husband and I now really wanted a sibling for our 3 year old because in a few years we know the house will be empty as the older boys finish school. My oldest is already moved out (reserves and college). Believe me, when I was 25 I never imagined in a million years that I would be pregnant this many times..lol..funny how life is.

Hi Betul, Wow! I am so happy for you! I think it takes a special kind of person to mother so many children. You must be so knowledgable too! Have you found that each of your pregnancies have had similarities or diferences in any way? I am still deciding whether I will go for the prenatal screening. I did have it last time I was pregnant and it showed an elevated nuchal reading (4.0). This put me at high risk..and inevitably i lost that pregnancy at 13 weeks 6 days. I had chromosonal testing on the fetus after the fact and everything was "normal". I am now pregnant 2 cycles post D&C..very nervous I might add. Had a low HCG on the first pregnacy test..will find out this afternoon whether the levels are going up! I am praying for success this time.
You seem to be very succesful with your pregnancies. Have you ever had any complications or miscarriages in the past? If you are not comfortable answering I understand :) I do hope you have the little girl you are secretly hoping for that would be great! In my family I am the youngest in a stream of 3 boys before me..my mother stopped when she had a girl!! Again congratulations on your pregnacy and best wishes! P.S. Are you living in Canada or the U.S. or UK?
XO
