First Visit, Possible Fibroids, No Heartbeat Via Doppler

Can you get an earlier sonogram? I get an internal sonogram every visit and can see the heartbeat which is very comforting. I am not sure if it is unusual not to hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks through the Doppler. I am also due in October, the 10th. |

Hi, I was also 34 when I concieved and 35 when I delivered (5 weeks ago) and I was already diagnosed with fibroids prior to the pregnancy. My uterus is "normally" the size of being 3 months pregnant. I carried my baby full term and she was 9lbs 2oz. Depending on where the fibroids are located you can have a perfectly normal pregnancy. Your doc should have you get an u/s not only to diagnose the fibroids but also to see the baby's h/b. This was my 4th baby and let me tell you all the rules change once you hit 35 (my last baby was when I was 31) it's amazing the stats that they can throw at you for complications due to "advanced materal age" (which is a term that you will be sick of hearing by the end of your pregnancy) My doctor could not find the heartbeat with the doppler at 10 weeks and I don't even think we heard it until I was around 13, but if your doc suspects fibroids I would push her to get you in for an u/s. That way they can hear the h/b (and see it) and also make an accurate diagnosis of fibroids. Did you have heavy periods prior to your pregnancy? This is usually a sign too. I'm just re-reading your post and your uterus being the size of an orange doesn't seem like it should have raised any flags with your doc. Is this a new doctor for you? Try not to stress, it sounds pretty normal to me. Take care and let us know how you make out, good luck:) |

I called the doctor this morning and requested an ultrasound, which they will do at the office this Wednesday afternoon. Better than waiting for her to decide when or if to do it, I think. I have had nothing unusual before or now that would indicate fibroids to me. New doctor's office, more experienced doctor seeing me this week. Will update Wednesday afternoon, hopefully with good news. Oh, and unless something really unusual comes up, I am opting not to do any invasive procedures relating to my age. Wonder if that is a common choice by women my age. Hoping for a heartbeat . . . . |

Update: Yes, thank goodness! All went well! The young doc scared me for nothing - ultrasound done, no fibroids/tumors, baby found and heartbeat seen! Says I'm 10w6d and baby is 10w1d. Doc couldn't find heartbeat with doppler, but doesn't matter because I saw it today! Thanks for posting, haven't told friends or family yet - need someone to tell - : ) |

I do not want to scare you with my answer, and your situation may be totally different than mine. I am 41 years old. I have a 13 yr old son, and I married for the first time in 2004. My Husband has no children of his own so we were trying for a baby. I got pregnant last year and found out that I was 8-10 weeks along. We had a week to be excited about the pregnancy, when I started spotting and then full out bleeding. The hospital confirmed that I was having a miscarriage. At the hospital, they did an internal sonogram, with the wand, and found no heartbeat, but they did find fibroids on the outside of my uterus wall. My GYN confirmed the diagnosis of fibroids, but said they were probably NOT the cause of the miscarriage. After a healing period, we began trying again. With no luck, we decided to go to a fertility specialist. He did and HSG test, some test with dye injected into your uterus, and they do an xray basically. He decided to do a (not sure of spelling) Laporoscopy/hysteroscopy. He removed the fibroids and cleared up some mild endometriosis which I was unaware that I had. Upon my next visit, he stated that he believed 99% positive that the fibroids are what caused the miscarriage. The were pushing the uterus in, therefore the embryo could not attach properly to my uterus wall. The doctor doubts that the heart ever beat at all. Two months after the surgery, I am pregnant again, althought it is still very early. This was a spontaneous pregnancy, without the help of fertility drugs which we had been trying. At my first official visit this time around, they did an internal sonogram. I am supposedly 7 weeks and the sonogram only showed the sack in the uterus, nothing in the sack. They said by next week, they should be able to see the "baby". They should also be able to pick up the heart beat through ultrasound, not just sound. I would think that at 10 weeks, you should be able to pick up the heartbeat. I wish you luck, and if you haven't already found it, a great site is www.pregnancy.org. Click on pregnancy calendar. |

I see that everything is going well for you. Guess I should have scrolled down to find that out before I sent my two cents. Maybe my info will be informative to someone who reads it. Congratulations! |
