I feel irritated by the (sometimes subtle) message from different sources that if I don't labour naturally I am less of a woman. Why not do a root canal naturally? - same pain, only root canal is for a shorter period of time.

I know what you mean. I find some of the NCB's pretty militant sometimes. Go with whatever works best for you. It's your body and your baby and your decision and you should not let anyone make you feel bad about your choice. All that said though, a childbirth with as few interventions as possible is usually the best thing for both you and the baby. I've been through 3 labors and the first 2 had interventions and epidurals. The last one was all natural and was, by far, the easiest birth. I'll be going all natural for this one as well. That's just me though. I've had plenty of friends who swear by the epidural! Good luck with whatever you choose :)

I believe everyones pain tolerance is different, myself I could not say "give me something" fast enough with my first child. So as you can see mine is low, I have no regrets and my baby was fine. In fact I will do again for this one.Good luck to you.

Hi Rose, I know how frustrating it can be to have people push their opinions on you... they all seem to come out of the woodwork while your pregnant... YIKES!!! With my first son I was induce and was screaming for medication which by the time I asked the nurse told me it wouldn't make a difference at this point. (Asked way too late) This time around I would like to try to go without any medication. I do however believe it's a personal choice. Bottom line you are going through the experience, you and only you should determine what is best for you and your baby. Good luck

Hi Rose, I think you should tolerate as much as you can, and you should NOT feel badly if you want to actually enjoy your baby's birthday. I ended up with c-sections due to a tiny pelvis and you can darn well bet I used pain meds afterwards...so why not get meds when you actually need them? Good luck and try and enjoy your birth YOUR way. Do keep in mind that getting an epi too early may stall labor and increase your chances of needing a c-section, but no one should expect a woman to go natural if she doesn't feel up to it.
