I am 20 wks (u/s says 19 wks) and at the u/s I had a few days ago, they found a cyst in baby's brain. I don't know much more than that because I have to see my ob/gyn on Monday to find out more. Of course my husband and I are very concerned. From friends I have heard of this happening to women in their 30's in the 2nd trimester and that these can appear and be nothing, they will disappear between 24-26 wks of gestation. What I don't know is what if they do not go away? Do you know if this is something that is common? Any of your comments or knowledge on this matter will be helpful as I want to find out as much information as possible.....thanks:)

READ THIS:Your doctor probably saw a "choroid plexus cyst" (CPC) inside the fetus' head. Be reassured that if the CPC is a single small cyst and no other problems are found with the fetus, chances are good that the baby is going to be OK.

The choroid plexus is soft tissue in the ventricles, which are fluid-filled spaces located on both sides at the base of the brain. The choroid plexus itself is in the head but not in the brain per se, but it contains fluid that bathes the spinal cord (via the ventricles) and the brain itself.

Cysts are pockets of fluid and/or cells. During an ultrasound, a technician will check the choroid plexus for any dark spots, which may indicate fluid or a cyst. In the second trimester, any spot in the choroid that's bigger than 10 millimeters is considered a cyst worth mentioning. CPCs, which occur in as many as one in 40 normal pregnancies, are small cystic areas often found on routine second-trimester ultrasounds. Half the time, CPCs occur on one side of the brain only (unilateral), and the other half they're on both sides (bilateral). Well over 90% of CPCs disappear on their own by the 26th week of pregnancy without ever affecting the fetus.

Although there's some controversy over whether fetuses with CPCs have an increased risk of chromosome abnormalities, if there is a risk, it's very small. If a fetus has only one isolated cyst smaller than 10 mm, the risk is probably no more than it would be anyway based on the mother's age. But if the fetus has other abnormalities, the risk rises. That's why it's important to do a thorough ultrasound exam and check for chromosomal anomalies. In most fetuses with trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), for example, and many with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), signs of the abnormalities show up on ultrasound.

A complete ultrasound provides information that will help you, your partner, and your doctor decide whether you need an amniocentesis, the ultimate diagnostic tool for chromosomal anomalies. Usually, in the case of CPCs, parents must weigh the risk of having an invasive procedure such as an amniocentesis against their desire to make sure the fetus has no chromosomal anomalies.

Thank you sooo much erica!!! I had a triple screen test done yesterday but even if it comes back positive, I don't think I will do the amnio.

erica, what a fabulous answer. How did you learn all this? Youre a great contributor to this site. I learned a lot about things I never heard of (luckily) ... Good luck to the baby, Cher. let us know how it goes- sounds optimistic, thanks to erica..

My friend Allison's daughter Emma had cysts also. They did "go away" and were never an issue again. She is almost 5 years old now and is a bright, happy little girl! Best of luck to you and your little one! :)

Thanks to all of you...I have been doing alot of research on the net too and have been told by friends that they know someone who was told the same thing, and the cyst (s) go away...and these children are fine. So I am thinking positive. I refuse to let Dr's worry me and ruin the excitement of having a baby. I will post an update on Monday after I see my specialist.

Cher - June 27th, 2005 10:18 PM

UPDATE: Seen my specialist today and my triple screen results came back normal. The cyst (a tiny 3mm) he says not to worry about that it will go away by 28 wks gestation. I can finally eat again and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy without worry. Thanks for all your support and encouragment and Erica - thanks so much for your knowledge:)

Cher, I'm so happy to hear that everything is okay. Sorry that I'm late to your reply. Being out sick. I have really bad headaches. I just turned 13 weeks on Saturday and hoping these headaches go away. God bless you and your little angel.

Amy - June 28th, 2005 3:15 PM

I'm so happy to hear your great news!! :)

I'm 22 and my son had choriod plexus cysts on his brain. I didnt have the amnio done, and I'm glad I didnt, he was born at 8lbs 15 oz. and is perfect. No abnormalities at all. The risk something is wrong with your baby is very very small, if you cant rest until you know, amnio might be able to tell you, but there are false positive results.

i also had an ultrasound today which detected a cyst in my baby's head. it was so disappointing and sad. but my doctor said it normally goes away in a few weeks. i have another ultrasound in 4 weeks to see. i pray everyday over my baby and i know she will be healthy.

HeatherIsHopeful - May 31st, 2008 12:57 AM

yummy_mummy89... I know this post is old so this is in response to your post. My baby had a cyst at my 20 us also.. it went away and she is healthy as can be. your doc is right, the cysts usually go away.. its part of the development or something so they are actually fairly common. try not to stress to bad, good luck hon, hope everything works out for you and your little one.
