I have fallen off the caffeine wagaon again. I have been drinking about 4 oz of coffee in the morning. I have read many articles on caffeine and pregnancy and feel that its ok in moderation. Does anybody else feel the same?

you will be fine drinking 4 oz of coffee, no biggy. You can even try buying decaf and tricking yourself into thinking you are drinking real coffee :)

I have had one coffee in the last 21 weeks (and had a few decaf) but have cut out caffiene altogether. At my last ultrasound the technician called in a cardiologist because they notice that the baby had an irregular heartbeat and that was the first thing they asked me was if I drank much coffee, so it does have an impact. They will monitor my baby for possible problem with the heartbeat, but they say this is common and that most babies grow out it by the time they are born.

Yes, I still have caffeine all the time. A cup of tea everyday usually, sometimes two. And on occasion have a coke or something...moderation is fine.

I heard that if you have around 150 mg caffeine a day, it has no known adverse effects on your baby's development... depending on the coffee you're drinking, this is roughly a 12-16 oz cup (a grande at Starbucks). I still can't resist the odd cup, but I've switched to lattes, because espresso has less caffeine, and the milk is a bonus!

I tryed to cut down, I have to have my greentea with honey and ginsing in it , its keeps the swelling and the bloating down. That has caffeine in it I also have had coke, I dont drink the diet much because they say its not good for you so in the last 27 weeks i have probley only had about 7 diet, I crave them. I have tried to cut caffine soda out. My morning coffee is out. I miss it so much but i have stopped that. I do drink decafe hot tea though. But with my first i drank soda all the time she was fine and my second I craved pepsi and they told me to limit to one or two a day. She came out find too.

I heard that you weren't supposed to drink Green Tea during pregnancy? Something about it making your vitamins not work? I could be wrong. I also have had some caffine. For the first trimester I didn't have any coffee it made me sick. I have 1 cup a day. With my first pregnancy I had coffee every morning. My second pregnancy I had coffee after the first trimester in moderation.
My 2nd son had an irregular hb also but not until my 38 wk. check up. We went to have another ultrasound done at that point and he had PAC which is an arythmia (irregular hb). When he was born it went away and we went to a cardiologist to be checked out. He is a perfect little guy with no problems so don't worry. This is very common with babies in the womb. I didn't have hardly any coffee. I don't know if caffine has anything to do with it?

chrissi79 - October 30th, 2006 1:24 PM

Actually I also heard that Green Tea is not adviseable to drink during pregnancy. I used to have 1 or 2 a day, but read a few articles about it not being good for you during pregnancy. ?? The limit that I've read is ok for caffeine intake is under 300mg/day, so if you stick to under that you should be fine, but DisneyG I would check out some articles on Green/Herbal teas...

I drink about two 4 oz cups a week. I think Crhissi79's right.... modertaion is the key. There's also caffeine free teas if you want to try those with a little honey. Sometimes I'll be in the mood for a soda so I'll have a Sprite or a Canada Dry....... they don't have any caffeine either.

Thx ladies, I asked my doctor about it and the nutritionist both didnt say anything about it being bad. :( To be honest its really hard to tell what is good and bad. I want to know how people get there info and why doctors dont agree. It makes this so frustrating. Well good luck ladies.

My doctor told me I could have 4 cups a day???.......I only have 1 maybe 2 a day though.

DDT - October 30th, 2006 2:34 PM

I have been drinking decaf coffee and tea since I found out I was pregnant, and then its once a day (in the morning). I do drink a pepsi/coke about twice a week.

baby020607 - October 30th, 2006 4:25 PM

The American Dietetic Association recommends consuming less than 300 mg of caffeine daily when pregnant. To give you an idea of what that means, a normal soda usually has between 34-44 mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee can contain anywhere from 33-176 mg. A Red Bull has 80 mg, Mountain Dew 55 mg. I drink one to two sodas a day, but some days I go without, it all depends on my mood. Unless your doctor gives you a specific reason to avoid caffeine, like heart beat irregularities, etc., it's not harmful in moderation.

Very interesting info. Thank you all so much for your input.

kerryv - October 31st, 2006 8:53 AM

dont worry about it as long as you arent drinkng too much and you space it out. i have about 2 cups of coffee in the morning and a dr.pepper in the afternoon.

I was just feeling guilty about this myself. My doc told me to cut coffee out completely, she even said to try to avoid decaf. During the 1st trimester it didnt worry me since i wasnt eating or drinking anything anyways, but now im craving it all the time. Im having a cup a day, either tea or coffee but im hoping that it is really harmless in small amounts. My friends doc told her that only a very small portion of it will get to the baby & even less if you drink lots of water during the day which will dilute the coffee further. I heard that excess caffine can cause a low birth weight in babies & the irregular heartbeats doesnt surprise me either coz when i used to drink alot of coffee i'd be having crazy palpitations too!
