When do you normally get your first u/s?? My doctor said they won't be doing it until 20 weeks, but a lot of people seem to have gotten them earlier. Is this normal?

in the uk we get two one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks the 12 week one is to date the pregnancy and the 20 week one is to look at baby anatomy to check if everything is as it should be

Normal is aroun 20 weeks. They can see everything much better. They will check every organ from brain to heart to bladder to kidneys. They cannot see all of those things if it is done too early. GL!

That is perfectly normal, I got one done at seven weeks but that is because of a previous m/c and getting pregnant so soon, they just wanted to see if all was normal this time around.
I got my normal one at twelve weeks, and I have my twenty week appointment this friday, I have no idea if they'll be doing one or not!
I hear most doctor's don't do ultrasounds until around twenty weeks though, it's just easier.
My sister with both her pregnancies never got an ultrasound until she was twenty weeks or so.

I'm in Wisconsin and my first isn't until 20 weeks either :) We can't wait!

My dr. does the first one as a transvaginal u/s at 8 weeks to make sure there is a fetus in the sac and that it's not a tubal pregnancy, they also date your pregnancy since you can't generally use your lmp. Then the next is around 20 weeks.

I got one at 12w ONLY because we wanted to screen for Down Syndrome, and they measure the nuchal area by u/s. If we didn't have this done, we would have had to wait till 18-20w to have the first one done.

perhaps it has to do with your insurance? i had my first one at 9 weeks. i assumed you get one automatically the first visit. i had one at 14 weeks to rule out abnormalities. switched docs and got another one at 16 weeks. got lvl 2 u/s at 20 weeks. so...so far had 4.

I think it definitely depends on the doctor's medical philosophies, and if you're high risk, having problems, past problems, etc. I seem to remember reading in the paperwork they gave me at my first appt that they only schedule one U/S at around 20 weeks for normal pregnancies. I'm high risk with medical complications of my own (diabetes & hypothyroid), so I had one at around 7 weeks, and my second hasn't been scheduled yet but probably will be for around 20 weeks. I also have one special U/S called a Fetal Echocardiogram around 20 weeks where they can look at the baby's heart very closely. Being a diabetic, they worry about heart defects. No problems last time, and hopefully this time goes just as well. Last time, I also had a third regular U/S in the 3rd trimester. This time I might have more late in the pregnancy because I delivered early last time due to a placental abruption and they'll be watching for that this time.
