Hi Jen327. First, please don't be scared about this. I had GD w/ my dd who was born 4 yrs ago. I was so scared, too. First, they tried to control it with diet and exercise. I had to walk briskly for at least 15-20 min a day, and I had to REALLY control my intake of carbs. I ate a lot of eggs, veggies, chicken, salad, etc and stayed away from potatoes, fruit and pasta (bummer!) I bought Splenda and used that instead of sugar. Diet and exercise works for a lot of women. In my case, my levels were still really high, so I had to test my blood 4x a day and inject insulin into my leg. My levels still could not be controlled, no matter what I did. I was told I would have a huge baby and that my amniotic fluid might dry up. I also had a scheduled c-section. THE GOOD NEWS is that my dd was born 7lbs, 3oz (NOT a gigantic baby by any means!!) and she was perfectly healthy. They pricked her heel for the 1st two days to check to see if she had diabetes, and she was fine. And, as soon as I delivered, I didn't have it anymore. I also gained 70 LBS w/ her. Now I am 14 weeks pg and have a good chance of having GD again - which means I am not scared about going thru it again - in retrospect it wasn't that bad. I am not sure what PCOS is or how it relates to GD, but I hope it eases your fears that, worse case scenario, you could be injecting yourself w/ insulin, it really isn't THAT BAD - honest. And this is coming from someone who is deathly afraid of needles! If you need to talk more about this, I am here.... |

is gaining a lot of wait like 80 or 70 pounds a sign of having GD? can you have it and not have gained a lot of weight? I have my test tomorrow, I'm just curious. |

Not at all...it depends on how your body reacts to being pregnant. Although extreme weight gain is common to diabetes, I had a friend who was a tiny little thing, and they diagnosed her w/ GD, so I really think it depends on your body, not your weight gain. Good luck! And, many women fail the 1st test but pass w/ flying colors on the 2nd test. |

Ugh I hope I pass the first one, I don't want to do the 3 hour one haha. What do you have to do for the 3 hour one? |

Well...you have to fast, and drink that sugary stuff again (tomorrow they will give you a bottle of orange or clear "soda" which is basically liquid sugar). Then, you have to get tested I believe once every hour to 1/2 hour - I think it is 4 blood draws total. You will be there for 3 hours and will wait most of the time, so bring a good book. And, you may want someone to drive you in case you feel lightheaded from not eating and having them draw all that blood. I am ok w/ driving home myself, but it is just a precaution. |

PCOS is Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, and has to do with hormones and insulin. It is similar to diabetes, but not the same. So anyway, I lucked out on the 3 hour one, I failed so bad I don't have to do it. I think all you do is drink two bottles of the nasty stuff then they take your blood at 1 hour 2 hours and 3 hours. |

Ugh... I hope it's not a large amount of liquid because I HATE drinking anything on an empty stomach, it makes me feel so gross. |

I had the 3 hr test last Friday, it's the same volume of liquid, it just has twice the amount of sugar in it. My experience was absolutely horrible, hope yours is better! |

The same volume of fluid but twice the amount of sugar? that's disgusting... and just wrong haha I passed my test today so I get to skip on that! |
