So last Friday I went to the doctor's office for my regular appt (every 4 weeks), and she really didn't have any good news for me. Just so you know I am 23 weeks tomorrow....she told me that I'm gaining too much weight, I am swelling badly, my blood pressure is high and she might take me off work in the next couple weeks if it doesn't go down by next Friday. I really am worried about this because I wanted to work full time til July 6th (3 weeks before due date). I was just wondering if anyone else has had a doctor's appt go like this and how you coped with it, trying not to totally stress yourself out! She also thinks I have Gestational Diabeties so I go for that test next wed, and now I have to come and see her every 2 weeks!

hi, mommy, I was wondering just how much weight you gained and what your b/p was to make your doctor suggest you might need bedrest?

denimbutterfly - March 20th, 2007 6:25 PM

First off- just try to relax and take a deep breath. I know it really sucks when you get a bad appointment and know it can stress you out more and make things worse and not always better. Drink plenty of water and try to find a time to take a walk every day. It does not have to be a power walk or anything crazy just a nice walk to move around and have time to relax. If you know you aren't eating the best you could be, try cutting down a little on the things you shouldn't and try adding a few more things that you should.

I have gained 24lbs and I honestly don't remember what she said was the b/p level was (I was freeking out a bit). Thanks for the tips denimbutterfly...it's not that I'm eating improperly, my dh and I have always eaten pretty healthy. I'm goin to try not to stress too much, but yep - it's hard.

I know telling someone not to stress is like an oxymoron. Because the more you think about not stressing means the more you are stressing! It's good that you are eating right, I really would try to just calm down about the situation and let yourself ease out of the stress. What kind of job do you have?

mommy1, im so sorry the doc has you so worried. I was 37yrs old when i was pg w./my first. I started out at a nice 127lbs but gained quickly...it seemed 5-7lbs everytime i had a checkup...doc was giving me red flags...mentioning gest diabetes, 10lb babies and c-section...i really couldnt do much b/c i wasnt really being that bad...lo and behold my weight gain totally slowed down on its own..my bp was fine except in the end (normal..hey were nervous) and i did not have gest diabetes. I delivered a very healthy a nice normal sized 7lb 14 oz boy...did have a c-section but for other reasons.
I dont know why the docs can be so alarming...just know that you need to do your part...and wait to see what the tests indicate b4 you get too too worried.
Plus alot of moms have all of the worriesom issues of gest diabetes etc...and still deliver perfectly healthy babes...these little people are pretty hardy!!
GOOD LUCk and try not to worry too much..its obvious you care..youre doing great!

I have gained 25lbs and I am 22w 4d. I also had high blood pressure during the first trimester but it somehow went down to normal. My doctor made me feel like crap when I last weighed in, some people just don't know how to say things politely I guess. She made it sound like I was gaining far too much weight, that it must be unhealthy weight and that I had to tame it down or else I may get gestational diabetes. She even wants to send me to a nutritionist! I don't know where the 25lbs came from but it's not an unhealthy weight, I eat good stuff! Anyway, I cried on the way home and felt so bad about myself, so you're not alone. Take some time to relax to get your blood pressure down. Maybe go to one of those blood pressure machines at the drug store to see what your blood pressure is when you're not at the doctor's office. Maybe it won't be as high. I wish you many relaxing thoughts and hope you hear good news on your next visit.

hi mommy1, 24 lbs isn't too much .. I have gained 19 so far and i am 22w 3d ... and i guess i'm one of the lucky ones with a wonderful doctor ... when we went in my husband mentioned that i'm gaining a lot ( not like HE noticed it but i had complained to him the day be4!! MEN!!!! =)
anyways my doc said that it's just fine as long as i am feeling good and eating healthy and that i could gain as much as i wanted ! some women just gain more others less... my sis-in-law gained almost 50 lbs and her baby was tiny and weighed 5 lbs ... so try not to worry too much and remember that it's not healthy to starve either coz then the baby will be starved too... as for the blood pressure it's probably stress and don't worry about gestational diabetes yet , get the test done first... good luck

I had high bp before I was pregnant and it has actually been way low for a while and the doc took me off the meds for it. Well, now it's crept up to about 118/78 which apparently is worrisome in pregnant women, so I guess that they'll put me back on the meds. Don't feel like you are alone in this. Is anyone else's bp at this level and their doc said nothing? I was just wondering if mine was being super cautious, b/c it seems fine to me. I also go for my GD test in two weeks and am trying to figure out what to eat so I don't have a lot of sugar in my body alread before I have to drink that drink. Good luck!

Thanks agin for all your responses. I'm feeling better about the whole thing now. My swelling has even gone down! I keep my feet elevated from 5pm til bed time and then all night when I'm sleeping. It's really seemed to help. I hope my b/p goes down soon, I might go to the doctor sometime this week just to get it checked (and not have to wait til the 30th). I'm sure my doc won't mind. I think the reason why the doc is worried about the weight gain is cause I was almost 200lbs pre-pregnancy....so I think I'm only suposed to gain 25lbs the enotire pregnancy. I honeslty don't care too much as to how much I gain, as long as my baby boy is healthy!!....I'm planning a mean diet after the baby's born!!!!

ginger6363 - March 21st, 2007 10:27 AM

hey, mommy I am glad you are feeling better. I don't know what your b/p was but 24 lbs doesn't sound like too much at all. I am almost 16 wks and have gained 18 lbs. I asked my doctor this morning and he said I was totally fine, if I was eating well and feeling good. I hope you can relax and your swelling and b/p go down! Best of luck to you!

britt_m - March 21st, 2007 1:24 PM

Wow, my doc was worried b/c I gained 12lb in 6 weeks, ( I was 26 w). But what I don't understand is I only gained 5 lb at 20 w. She was interrogating me about what I ate and exercise. Then said we'll wait til the next appt to decide to see a nutritionist! I was so upset, I eat pretty healthy, I do have some empty carbs everyday, a few chips or something, but who doesnt. I also walk at least two miles. I posted a question two weeks back after I came home from the appt and it almost seems everyone has a certain time they gain most the weight. As long as your watching what you eat and staying motivated, I wouldn't worry.

MNMOM - March 21st, 2007 10:03 PM

squished: my BP has been the same as yours - that is a very healthy number and for me it is lower than my pre-pregnancy reading! My doctor and I are both thrilled. I am 26 weeks and have gained 14 pounds.

squished - March 21st, 2007 11:26 PM

Thanks MNMOM! I was wondering about that and am so glad that you answered. I'll just have to keep an eye on it then and stop panicking :)

I gained **70 POUNDS** w/ my 1st child, and I was diagnosed w/ gestational diabetes. You need to fast for these tests - if you fail the 1hour test, then you have to go for a 3 hour test. And, it doesn't matter what you eat, SQUISHED, because it measures your sugar over a 6 month period. I had to test my blood 4x a day and give myself insulin shots in the leg. To be honest, I HATE needles, but it wasn't that bad, looking back at it. You get used to it. I also had a scheduled c-section, and they told me my baby was going to be GIGANTIC and that all my amniotic fluid might dry up if I couldn't control my sugar. In March 2003 I had a beautiful 7lb 3 oz girl, perfectly healthy. And I am 14 1/2 weeks pg w/ my 2nd child. So, even though doctors warn you of such things, it is not as bad as it seems. The high bp concerns me a bit, but there are SO MANY WOMEN who have high pb w/ perfectly normal deliveries. HUGS to you and let us know what the doc says!
