Over the holiday, my mother in law walked over to me, pat my belly (as most people do) and then proceeded to lift my shirt infront of the whole family. Is this appropriate? She seemed to think so! My sister in law went bonkers yelling at her, but her response was "you can do that to pregnant women". My response was " YOU CAN?" I think she was embarassed enough and won't try that again, but I was just curiuos if anyone else had this happen to them. By the way, I'm in my 16th week and popping. Thanks! signed...embarassed

No, this hasn't happened to me....and it better not or someone's going to lose a hand! I don't know what it is about people, but they seem to think pregnant women's bodies are public property. Ohhhh this bugs me!

Kate - December 28th, 2005 9:14 AM

Hasn't happened to me either... I think I give off the "if you touch me, you die" vibe pretty well. :) I would not let my mom do that to me in front of anyone. However, some of the stuff people say and do to pregnant women astonishes me! It is like all rules are thrown out the door -- our bodies are no longer ours and they can say anything they want! Personally, I would make it very clear to my mom not to do that again...

A girl from highschool that I havn't seen in awhile came up to me and tried that I almost knocked her out. Everyone who has wanted to see my tummy has asked and sometimes I'll show it and sometimes I wont but I think it's very rude for someone to come up and do that.

Well, if it were my own mother I would have given her an earful but since it was my MOTHER IN LAW - it made it that much worse!!!!!! I hope she never does it again!

For some reason, it has not bothered me when people do that. Asked my bf if it bothers him, & it doesn't either. I would think it'd bother one or the other of us, but no.

I have had a few people touch my belly (mostly my mom, boyfriend and a few close friends, but I didnt mind) but I hate when people that barely know me tell me that I'm starting to gain a little weight in my middle area---well if they werent so quick to tell me im fat then they would realize that I'm pregnant! that drives me crazy!

JK - December 29th, 2005 3:22 AM

people amaze the crap out of me... I would never lift anyones shirt to look at their pregnant belly!

Rowan - December 29th, 2005 2:35 PM

Who would want to see my newly forming stretch marks?? I would not feel comfortable with just anyone seeing my new shape.

Melanie - December 30th, 2005 3:54 PM

My mother in law did the exact same thing to me! She walked over and yanked up my shirt! Boy I wish I had someone there to yell at her. I was in shock. People are rude an inconsiderate to pregnant women all of the time. There is definetely a vibe that the belly is a free for all. MADDENING!

rl - December 30th, 2005 5:24 PM

that is crazy the only one that would do that would be my dh and only when it is just us but I have a tatoo on my beloy and it has stretched a bit ha ha lol and I have shown a few people but I was the one that did it so that is ok but i have a nice belly no stretch marks and I am 35wks with my 3rd but I still would not want someone to just come up and do that to me maybe she was just excited is this her first grandchild she was not trying to upset you I am sure but it was rude also

There's so much sentiment on respecting personal -- especially physically -- boundaries that I'm shocked that people just assume it's okay to touch & manipulate a woman's personal space just because she's got a baby in her belly. I wouldn't even want a random person touching my child OUTSIDE of the womb without my permission first. What happened to common courtesy?

Brittany - December 30th, 2005 6:06 PM

O wow, I really don't think thats appropriate. Geeze, us pregnant ladies go through soo much! The endless dr. exams and LABOR! Now thats a big deal, doctors/nurses and everyone all down there. There are a lot of embarrassing situations with pregnancy and you've dealt with enough so far. I would have said something to your mother in law!! If it happens again, put some boundaries down, you don't want her thinking she can take advantage of you with other issues as well. Good luck, I hope that doesn't happen to me!

momm4 - January 2nd, 2006 12:12 PM

As yet, no one has tried getting under my clothes, but I am always amazed at how many people want to touch my belly! Not to mention the crazy things people will SAY while your pregnant. I will never forget the time I was having a vaginal exam during my first pregnancy. I was only 18, and still pretty self-consious. My boyfriend was in the waiting room, and the doctor walked me out there when we were finished. He looked at my boyfriend and goes, "Sorry it took so long, but I couldn't seem to find a speculam long enough for this one. She has the longest vagina I've ever seen! It's pretty long, don't ya think?" I wanted to crawl under a chair and die, there were other patients in that waiting room, and they were all trying not to laugh. Needless to say, that guy was not my doctor very long!

Momm4, I'm sorry for you embarrassment but your story was really, really funny. I can't stop laughing. I hope you can laugh about it now. When I was about 16 or 17, my period started unexpectadly and I had to stop at a convience store for pads. This was the first time I ever had to buy pads on my own so I was mortified and stalked the store before heading to the counter. Just as I was leaving this guy that I had the hugest crush on walked in and grabbed my bag in a joking matter. I tried to grab the bag back from him and he joked about me not wanting him to see my maxi pads. He really didn't think that was in the bag. He then pulled the box out and held it over his head in the parking lot. I died!! And when he saw what he was holding, he died too! (It could have been toxic waste as far as he was concerned.) It was a mortifying experience at the time, but now I think its hilarious.
