Anna its really great that he is doing the test, most guys wouldnt. The thing with doing it at home, is thats its an uncontrolled enviroment, so human error is a major factor (not getting it all in the cup, plus you HAVE to have it at the clinic within 20 minutes, or the sperm will start to die.) Just to give you an idea here was our first numbers 30million, less then 1% mobility and motility. Our second test at the clinic showed his real numbers 113 million 98% motiltiy. I really would try the home approach, but if the numbers seems off, just perform the test at the clinic (you can help him there as well) I didnt know all this and I got our numbers back two days before Xmas, I was devistated to say the least, $1000 later at the fertiltiy clinic I can at least say I am more hopeful. I am not feeling very optimistic with the Clomid thing, based on our situation, but I have to keep some hope. |

Thanks for the info mg. The other option that my doctor said is that we could do a post coital something-or-other to test his swimmers that way. That seems like it would be even more unreliable. Maybe third times a charm and it will work this month! Welcome SJF! Feel free to ask any questions - I'm still learning too! :) |

Hey thanks for helping me. I had a post cotial test done and then had my dh do a semen analysis and the post cotial test just showed some sperm swimming around and I don't think it was very accurate. My dh was normal when he did the semen test |

Oh this is our first month of Clomid, I am just waiting for the big O, but we are only planning 3 cycles of clomid. But since our problem up to this point has been a male factor issue, I just dont see how having me crank out eggs like a chicken (LOL)is going to help. I guess I am just a little pestimistic after the last few months. I think its great your Dh is doing this test, my dh problem was from mumps he had when he was 11years old!!! I guess you never know, but its better to find out earlier then later!! |

Hey mg! I think I've talked to you in the past on a different thread! Hi girls! I'm going on a year ttc #1 and just finished my first round of Clomid 100 mg this week and just waiting to O. I've also done the post-coital, dh has done the SA and I've had an HSG. So far, everything has checked out perfect so it's just unexplained at this point. Which is frustrating...I'd rather hear something is wrong so it would all make more sense. Out of curiosity though, did anyone's doctors suggest doing the clomid AND a IUI right away? My RE is doing the IUI right away this week since she says that doing Clomid alone can sometimes dry up your cm and create a hostile environment for the swimmers!. Anna B./ SJF- have your doctors mentioned doing the IUI in combination with the Clomid? I find it weird that they wouldn't just do it right away so you don't have to wait it out for three cycles. I'm rather glad my doctor is taking a more aggressive approach since I'm 34 and my dh is 41. I hope you girls don't mind my popping in - you all sound like a fun group! |

Hey Bing um my doctor did not mention anything about an IUI. Can you explain what that is, I think I know. I am also wondering what the next step would be after clomid. I have never had a HSG done either. What would be the next step. |

Hi SJF- an IUI is where they inject the sperm directly into the uterus after they have "washed" the sperm sample (that way it's more concentrated). I guess it's a very basic procedure done right in the doctor's office. I was a little shocked that my doctor wanted to do it right away in conjunction with the Clomid since I thought I had to try just Clomid alone for 3 cycles and if it didn't work THEN move on to the IUI. But she assured me that it's very common to just do both right away and there's a better success rate in doing that. I'm sure everyone is different so maybe there's a reason why your doctor is recommending just Clomid for now. However, you may want to ask about the HSG since that determines whether there are any blockages in your tubes, etc....otherwise, what's the point in taking the medication if the eggs can't get through? I've read on other threads where some women were on Clomid for 6 cycles with no success and *then* had the hsg to only discover they had a blockage. As a patient, I would be really pissed at my doctor for putting me through that! It couldn't hurt to ask your doctor about these tests, especially if you've been trying for a while. But like I said, everyone's situation is different so maybe you don't need them just yet. However, if clomid doesn't work for you I would think your next step would be the IUI (after making sure your tubes are clear though!). Good luck!! |

I had an HSG back in the fall and it showed no blockage. All my blood work has been normal too. This is our third month on clomid so I realy hope it works. My doctor hasn't mentioned anything about an IUI. I know this is probably a dumb question but does your dh have to come with you to get the sample??? |

Bing-Hey thanks for the advice. I will know if I am pregnant by the end of the month. Then I think I will check into those things. Are you seeing just a regular ogbyn or are you seeing a fertility specialist? I think that question is good to know I would even have a clue if my dh would have to come with me for an iui or not. on another note, one of my friends was on clomid and she got pregnant on her third round of clomid. So I really pray that 3 is a charm. How about you? |

SJF - I really hope the third cycle will be successful. I'm trying not to get stressed this month - hard to do because I stress about everything! I hope this month is lucky for you too! |

hi girls ! wow, lots of chatter. my network connection has been down and haven't been able to post lately. anyway, i have good news. went to the RE this morning and i have 2 follicles !!!! woohoo. guess that second dose of clomid kicked things into action. they did a post-coital and they said my cm looks great and the swimmers are everywhere. so he has lots of activ elittle guys so no worries there. anna, my dh hasn't been tested, just this post-coital but i think it's a good test. i haven't heard anything regarding it not being accurate. i'm sure an SA wouldn't hurt, but a post-coital is a good indicator. so i have to go back in on friday b/c he said it's still early so i have a few more days till O. i can't wait !!!!! i have O pains right now. i'll write more in a bit, but just wanted to stop back in and share my good news :-) |

Kristina - that's awesome!!! I'm so excited for you! Maybe this will be our lucky month and we will all have Christmas babies! That would be the best Christmas present ever. If you don't mind me asking, what do they do in a post-coital test? My doctor said we had to bd right before coming in and it had to be around ovulation but that's all I know. Thanks! |

anna, i know i was thinking when would i deliver if i got prego this month and saw it would be around christmas. how much fun would that be ? so for the post-coital they just told us to bd the night before and then come in first thing in the morning. then after they did the ultrasound she collected a sample of my cervical mucous from my cervix. so they had to use the speculum which i hate. anyway, then they put it under a microscope which then projects onto a screen for you to see. it was amazing ! reminded me of the beginning of "looks who's talking" :-) oh and the opks are not too much money. i bought the Answer brand that comes with 20 test strips. that was i think around 17 or 18 dollars. other kits only come with 7 tests, so this kit was better since i didn't know when i was O'ing. i would definitely recommend them :-) i'm also taking robitussin. not sure if it'll help but since it can't hurt, thought i'd take a whirl and they said my cm looks good. maybe this is our month finally !!!!!!!!! what day ar eyou on right now of clomid ? or are you done taking it already ? we're almost on the same timeframe now...... |

Unfortunally for me (insurance reasons) I am taking Clomid before getting my HSG. Its cheaper for me to take 3 months of Clomid (3months x $22) opposed to a $1400 test. Although it does worry me alittle, since I had one ovary removed due to a rupture, so I very well could have blockage. But three months are not going to kill me, consisdering if I did have a blockage, I wouldnt fix it anyways. I should be Oing any day, I have ovarian tenderness right now, the MD said becouse I only have one it could be hypersensitive, and to call her if the pain gets to bad. We have been bedding every other day, my poor DH is like "now today is our day to bed right, and shouldnt we switch positions to help with fertilization, and my personal favorite so I will see you in about 20-30 minutes, make sure to keep your hips up on a pillow." Bless his heart, he is so hopeful and wants this so bad. I think he blames himself for whats going on. I told him I think at the end of our 3rd clomid cycle before we start IUI, I want to start our adoption paperwork, just incase so that we are that much ahead of the game. I guess you just get to a certain point where you want to be a parent so bad that biology stops having anything to due with it.LOL |

Hi Anna B. and SJF! Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, I'm actually sneaking on at work! Anna B. - your dh doesn't need to come in for the IUI...they are having us "collect" at home and then bring it in right away. They then do the "wash", which takes about an hour and then perform the procedure. SJF - I'm seeing a fertility specialist. When I told my OB that we were having some problems she just referred me right away. This is only my first try with Clomid so I'm hoping that in combo with the IUI will have some success! We're going on 9 months TTC so I'm getting really impatient and really tired! So is DH! Dancegirl - Congrats on the follies! Isn't it bizarre to know what's happening in your body? I had my U/S this morning to check my follicle size and there are four big ones. Kinda freaked me out but figure if just ONE of them can get the job done then I'm happy! By the time we all get our BFP's we'll all experts in the fertility field! Whew, what a learning experience! |
