my friend is 18 & shes carrying twins, she asked what help induce me & i told her sex & she said the doctor told her NO SEX, the doctor told her it causes STILL BIRTHS, is that true!?

freebird - May 23rd, 2007 1:24 PM

I don't know if it can cause a still birth, but sex can cause you to go into labor too early (maybe that's what the doctor meant?). When you're carrying multiples there is always a greater risk of premature birth. I'm sure they want her to carry them as long as possible. How far along is she?

When carrying twins its always best to stay away from certain things, if her doctor says no sex then she should listen to him. I don't know about the still birth part being true but I do know someone who was having twins and because she lived a sexual life one of her babies didn't survive and died when she was 7 months along. So I'm guessing there is truth to that. I was 18 and I miscarried twins, I never went to a doctor but DH was curious and asked my doctor one day and she said that it could have been because of sex or stress. But everyone is different, how far along is she?

i believe 34 weeks id have to ask shes due july 11

kim00 - May 23rd, 2007 3:36 PM

If her due date is July 11, it puts her at 33 weeks. I don't know her circumstances, but there are many reasons they would say no sex. Depending on where the placentas are located, how the twins are positioned, and how they are planning to deliver the babies and when. I would tell her to strictly follow the orders of no sex.

A lot of women with high-risk pregnancies are advised not to have sex, she should listen to the doctor! She shouldn't be worrying about inducing labor at 33 weeks anyway.. most women with twins usually have them a couple weeks before their due date.

Nerdy_Girl_10242006 - May 23rd, 2007 4:00 PM

Yeah it would be best for her to not do anything at this point to induce her labor, twins are usual smaller when they are born to begin with so she should try and do what she can to not induce her labor for the sake of her babies. most of the time they do a c-section automatically with twins because most doctors think its to high of a risk to deliver twins naturally (depending on the doctor) But usually they do plan for 2-3 weeks ahead of the actual due date to deliver the babies or for a c-section. I bet she is miserable but she should try to hold off as long as she can.

esp. with twins, the longer she waits the better and the less likely they will have to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. in normal pregnancy sex can't cause still birth, and like freebird said maybe meant no sex cause it could induce labor, and labor too early can be life threatening. and as far as c sections go, it was recently published that outside of a medical emergency, elective or unnessecary c section have double the infant mortality rate than vaginal births, so docs should be trying for vaginal delivery first but with twins they will be prepared for c sections as sometimes the 2nd child requires it, it does have a higher risk than single baby births, ect.. and it is also deemed safer to preform a c section no earlier than 39weeks because of the risk of miscalculated due dates and the risk of an infant having immature lung development which can be very serious. sorry thats so long oh my gosh....i read A LOT, i know i'm a nerd but i want to be a doula and eventually a midwife someday. good luck to your friend, i know twin pregnancy can be exhausting, my roommate and i had the same due date but she had twins, made my belly look teeny tiny haha

kim00 - May 23rd, 2007 7:32 PM

With twin pregnancies, they usually do a c-sec. Depending on how the babies are positioned. If they are both head down, they usually give the mom the option vag or c-sec. If she chooses vag, they always have a c-sec room prepared. Because when the first one comes out, there is so much more room in there than before, and the other baby can rotate out of desirable birthing position, meaning they will have to do a c-sec. There are some instances that a still birth could occur. We don’t know her circumstances, so we can’t say sex wouldn’t cause this. If the placenta is down low, by the cervix, it is a placenta previa, and she starts to dilate, it could result in still birth. There is also what is called an abruption, where the placenta is detaching from the uterus, this could also result in a still birth. Her dr is the only one that knows the circumstances, so when they say no sex, that what you do.

33 weeks is too early for her to be thinking of ways to start labor. I know how uncomfortable a twin pregnancy can be but she needs to carry them as long as possible. If her doc says no sex she needs to listen.

babybradley - May 29th, 2007 9:28 AM

Her doctor has told her no sex for a reason. The babies need to stay in there as long as they can!!!! The time these babies are in her belly is a time she cant give back to them. I know how uncomfortable it is with a singleton I cant imagine how uncomfortable it could be with twins.... BUT her dr is the only one who is going to know things like this!!!!! Trust him he wouldnt put her or the babies in any danger!

SaraH - May 29th, 2007 3:19 PM

Normally in a health pregnancy sex is just fine. I have never heard of it causing still births, BUT it can, if the pregnancy is high risk, cause problems such as preterm labor. If she were to have the babies too early then they could obviously die. Her doc told her NO SEX for a reason and she should listen to it. If a pregnancy is not high risk then normally sex is fine, but if your doc tells you no sex there is a reason and it could possibly cause problems. So, always fallow your doc's advice.

pinkrox87 - May 29th, 2007 7:11 PM

i agree with all the previous posters. if her doctor said no sex, then she should listen. and coming from an 19 year old who carried twins to 34 weeks i dont know how she could be comfortable enough to want to do it anyway! LOL

kendra1988 - May 30th, 2007 8:00 AM

she wasnt tryiong to induce labor ladies sry she just asked because shes like i was just wondering what made you go into labor ne thing did you try n e thing i didnt try all though i wanted to but i thought at 37 weeks i good still go three more weeks if she wasnt here then i would think of things but i said i had sex

kendra1988 - May 30th, 2007 8:04 AM

pinkrox - she doesnt want to. read the question ladies thats going to ibug me. ughh the questions says no sex for her, because i causes still births is that true!? thats my question not about sex not about anything. thats all i wanted to know if that was true or not! just asking. but i still have only got like 2 answers to that but oh well i believe that it could happen but what not. for everyones information = she wanted to know what to advoid thats why she asked what help induce me.!.

maren - May 30th, 2007 2:02 PM

i guess it could cause still birth depends maybe her doctor has her on pelvic rest(no sex) because she is at risk for pre term labor. Honestly i had sex till a couple days before i had my daughter so no i dont think that sex CAUSES a still birth but if someone is at risk for pre term labor like multiple pregnancies then in a round about way having sex could cause a still birth

kendra1988 - May 30th, 2007 2:06 PM

thanks hunni yah i know i had sex the night before i went into labor :) lol i was fine.
