I am new to this, my first question. I have been having pain from one rib all the way around to my back from under my breast. It does not hurt as bad when I stand but to lay down it kills. Anyone else have this problem?

my upper right hurts a lot too... I find if i am sleeping in bad positions, which i do everynight in order to try to get comfy, it makes it worse. could also be position of baby. if its really really bad, call your dr but if its just back pain there isnt much they can do, except tell you to try to change positions, and maybe use a warm, damp towel :(

also, next time you go to dr, make sure they check your bloodpressure, since one odd sign of preeclampsia is pain on the right side.

YES!!!! This has been my biggest/only pregnancy complaint so far! I feel great except for this agonizing pain under my ribs all the way around, back to front. The ache is so bad, it just consumes me! It seems to start at the back, just below my scapula (shoulder blade) and radiates around to the front when it gets really bad. It is MUCH worse when I lay down and the only relief I get is to sit up or better yet, stand up! This makes sleeping very difficult! There are nights when I only get 2 hours sleep because of it. There also seems to be no relief - I've tried ice packs, hot packs and even bought a massager and nothing helps. I was so eager to seen the obgyn in hope he would have a miracle solution for me, but he basically said it due to expansion as things push up and not much can be done. It also seems like if you are one of the unfortunate people to get this "rib thing", we will be stuck with it for the remainder. I'm 29 weeks, so I guess I have a ton of sleepless nights yet to come - good practice I suppose!!!!

I am 29 weeks and just started getting that pain as well. It is on the right and starts in the back above the kidney area, or right at it, and wraps around when it is really bad. It is worrisome, but have not had a chance to ask doc yet. Could be all the expansion. I was just telling my husband today that it felt like baby was running out of room in there and I feel so much more pressure now, and uncomfortable. I am still small for the number of weeks I am, so I can't imagine how I will feel in a couple more weeks when I really start to expand.

Audrea- I had a serious episode of that, and I was going to go to the emergency room. I stopped at the OBGYN office at their insistance first, and they checked me for back labor which thank goodness, it wasnt. The OBGYN said very painful back spasms are actually common in pregnancy- I was 28 weeks or so when it happened. Ive had it three times. What helped was extra strength tylenol and lying on the opposite side. The OBGYN told me she sees many mothers come in with that terrible kidney area pain that wraps around that think theyre in labor when all it is, is a back spasm.

I am just now 29 weeks and I have the exact right side rib/back pain! I am having a lot of trouble sleeping lately b/c of it!

Thanks for all of your comments. It is much worse at night. I just can't get comfortable. Tonight is a bad night. Think I only slept 2 hrs. last night.

I cant sleep either,i was just wondering if you tried a painkiller thats safe to take during pregnancy.I know lortabs are fine and one time i complained about not being able to sleep and my doc said i could try some benadryl its safe and it makes you drowsy.

Jill, thats about how much I slept last night, btwn the back pain, rib pain and restless legs.
---Ive tried tylenol, it works a bit on the back pain.. its so hard when its this hot (92-98 degrees in the east!) and youre in your 8th month and cant sleep!! --- Also I know youre not supposed to lie flat on your back after 1st trimester so you dont compromise blood flow to the baby... so when I sleep on my back I am propping myself up using 6 pillows so I am 50degree angle - however the baby doesnt seem to like it, he kicks a lot whenever I do it! Has anyone else noticed this?
