To those of you ladies who have gone through deliveries...Did you find that your labor and delivery was close to what your mothers experienced? Like, if you were born early, were YOUR kids born early? If your mom had a long labor, did you? Just curious how genetics play a role in all this....Thanks!

im glad someone asked this...i was wondering it as well...but with my brother my mom was in labor for 13 hours before they told her that her hips were rounded and she couldnt give natural birth...and then with me she had a schedualed c-section...but went into labor the same morning she was due with me...and had me like 3 hours after her water broke...but by csection....so i dont really know...her mother says her labors were short and easy...so im hoping, thats how it goes...

Sorry, this is gonna be a bit long... My mom had 4 natural (no induced, no pain med. deliveries). The first three (me , my sis and my bro) were all within a 10-12 hour range for length of labor. I was 7 15, my sis was 5 12 and my bro was 7 6. My youngest brother was also a med free delivery, but he had the cord wrapped around his neck three times and they weren't monitoring her, so they had no idea these problems were going on. With him she had a 24 hour labor that was AWFUL. They wanted to do a c-section, but there were only 2 ORs and both were in use at the time. Finally, he came vaginally, but wasn't breathing and didn't have a heartbeat. He was revived, but has learning disabilities and is legally blind from the birth trauma. He weighed 9 3. Anyway, I have had three c-sections. My first was a 24 hour labor that failed to progress (only got to 1/2 cm) and I had an epidural in that labor. Finally, there was meconium present and my ds's heartbeat was erratic, so they did the c-section. My ds was 9 5. When I was pregnant with my second baby, I found out on my 20 week u/s that I have scarring of the cervix (from an infection after a D&C after a miscarriage) and I can't dilate because of it. So I had scheduled c-sections with #'s 2 and 3. I had a spinal with #2- a girl. She was 8 3. Then, because of very low platelets, I wasn't allowed to have a spinal with #3, so I had to be asleep under general anesthesia. My ds was born weighing 10 6. So, if I hadn't had a miscarriage in my first pregnancy and had the resulting infection and scarring, maybe my stories would have been more like my moms, but who knows?? Anyway, that's how my births and baby weights compared to my mom's...

I haven't had my first yet, but so far I am definitely not following my mom's patterns. She had two 6 weeks early (but we were pretty good sized) and one 2-3 weeks early (almost 8 pounds). My due date was yesterday. No dilation at all. My doctor feels that a natural labor is unlikely to start on its own. Talking about induction for the 20th.My Grandma was way late my mom-like 3 weeks! Maybe I take after her?!

I asked my doc this question because my mother had horrible birth stories, including 4 blood transfusions and 30 + hrs for all 4 labours, but my doc assured me that it is no indication of how i will go and sure enough i had a very quick smooth labour 2 weeks ago with my first child. I did not have any problems that my mother had, i found that during the transition stage i started to worry that things would start going wrong like they did for mum, but i pushed those negative thoughts out and had a wonderful birthing experience.

I don't think that our mothers' birth affect ours too much. It depends on your body and the size of your baby. I was born premature, my dd was born late. My grandma claims to have experienced no pain at all during labor. Every labor is different too. You could have a pregnancy go overdue, and then go on to give birth to a premature baby the second time around, so I certainly don't think that our mom's are any indicator of how our labors will go.

Good tol hear that it's not hereditary! My mom had a 19 hour labor and was 2 weeks overdue. I do NOT want to go late!!! :)

well my mom has 5 sisters and that all have 2+ kids and and two of my cousins have kids and all of the kids were born after 40 weeks my aunt even had 1 of hers at 43 weeks 2 days, and i was induced at 40 weeks 1 day so i guess that could be heritery because everyone was born late but we all expirenced different labours
