Question / Poll About Labour

When I had my son, I got the epidural and was worried about getting sick from it, but I didn't, and I didn't afterwards either. I talked to the nurse about it because if it was going to make me sick, I didn't want it.. (I am such a baby when it comes to throwing up!).. and she said when woman get sick, it is their bodies reaction to the pain, not the medication. So you may be numb and not feeling anything, but your body is still reacting to it. On the other hand, if you have gas, or whatever other kind of narcotic they can give you, that can make you sick if you are sensitive to medication, which is why I opted for the epidural and not the gas or oral medication. And I also think there really is no way to tell for sure... I mean woman may say, Yeah, I had this medication and it made me sick...well...who's to say they wouldn't have gotten sick if they didn't get the medication? |

I threw up twice, maybe due to the pain. I also threw up the meds I was given orally before my emergency c section. i literally took it and brought it back so had to take it again. It was mainly water i brought up though, labour made me incredibly thirsty and i drank LOADS!!!! Honestly, when in labour you won't care less about vomitting. |

i vomited during labour. i couldnt even have any water - let alone food during the whole 16 hours. but as you know everyone was different. i had no drugs, so it was all due to pain, i guess. |

hi, i vomited during labour but i was given pethadine a few hours before, don't know if that had anything to do with it. |

i vomited when i was in labour with my first but i was given pethadine and hadn't eaten anything before hand. with #2 i had some toast and never had any vomiting at all. it depends on the pain relief and if you have eaten anything before labour. i know it is a stupid thing to say but try not to worry as the more you worry about the labour the harder it could be. |

Hello, I never vomited during labor and I have given birth 3 times and am 29 weeks pregnant with number 4. I have had a natural birth, a epidural birth, and a water birth. |

Hi - I've had 3 natural births - no pain relief and on each occassion I have been sick - right at the outset of labour...Always on an empty stomach so...yuck...Its also a thing I hate the most in the world..so when I'm sick the first time I immediately get the anti-nausea jab/ pass on what its called but it stops you throwing up...Works a treat every time..I don't even think about it now...I know I'll be sick once and only once...I warn the m/wife in advance so she has it standing by.. |

I didn't throw up during labor (I only had labor with my first), but threw up after having been stitched up from my c-sections with #'s 1 and 2. I was given anti-nausea meds with my 3rd and didn't have a problem. |

Keep in mind that sometimes throwing up is the body's natural reaction to something that is happening to you. When you go into labour, digesting a huge meal you just ate is probably the last thing your body is concerned about, so it might just get rid of it. Also, pain can sometimes bring on nausea. For example extreme headache pain that happens with migraines often brings on nausea/vomiting. So labour pains could probably do the same thing. I threw up soon after my baby was born. The basin was right there and the nurse said that it happens all the time. Just don't worry about if it happens - there are a lot of gross things that go on when you are having a baby and it's all normal. Good luck! |

I did not throw up while in labor or afterwards. I was induced with pitocin but did not have drugs for pain relief. I did not eat for more than 24 hours before giving birth though. I was on a clear liquids diet. |

I hear ya with the vomiting phobia! Of all there is going on during labor that is the last thing i'd want to have happen!! I am 37wks with #3. Never got sick with other 2 labors. 1st one was 17 hours of harsh labor followed by a c-section, second was given Phentynol (sp?) for pain. I felt a wave of nausea with the first shot then was fine after that. We'll see how this one goes. |
