My OB and the nurse at the lactation clinic at the hospital recommended the medela breast pump it is the next best thing to the hospital grade pumps but quieter and lighter, and you can carry it and it looks like a back bad you would take out with baby or to the gym or something.

I've heard that the Medela is excellent!!!

With my first baby, I purchased the Avent ISIS Via Breast Pump kit after leaving the hospital and using a very powerful electric hospital pump. Unfortunately, eventhough the Avent seemed well constructed, and definitely pumped, I found that the effort required to keep manually squeezing the handles to fill just one bottle was a bit much for me. I got cramps in my hands after about twenty minutes each time. Every woman is so different. Maybe for some, their milk flows very very easily, and fast, so a manual pump is a great option. But if your let down is not aggressive, you may quickly become frustrated with manual pumps. I think I tried my Avent 6 or 8 times sometimes for as long as 45 minutes without much success,so I eventually stopped trying. I ended up never pumping bottles, and just feeding on demand (which really wasn't that bad!) I paid $75 I think for the pump, and it is basically brand new, so I will try to sell it. So, in my opinion, an electric pump is probably less frustrating, but may be more expensive. I intend to try an electric pump this time and see if I have any better luck. From my research, I have heard that the Medela Pump In Style is a great investment (but expensive). Hope this helps!

I was wondering about this too and asked some freinds my doc and the health nurses. They all said the same thing don't waste your money on a cheapy one, if your'e going to buy one make sure it's the madela hospital grade pump. It's around $350 in Canada, I think amazon has them in the states for better prices. But they also said the best ones, the ones they use at the hospital can be rented for cheap at almost any drugstore!!! we have 3 in town and they all rent them monthly for like $20. So I've decided to save my money and rent one if it's necessary, otherwise I'll just breastfeed! Hope this helps!

I have a Medela and loved it!!!! Very efficient and worth it! Check with your insurance companies to see if they will cover some of the cost.

I just got the Medela pump called Swing. It is a single electric pump and was around $150. If you're going back to work then I would get a double electric pump (Either Pump in Style Original or Pump in Style Advanced)....although if you're just going to work part time or something then I'm sure the Swing pump would probably be enough. I am not going back to work at all...I just wanted the option to pump and give a bottle. Both the Swing and the Pump In Style Advanced have a new 2 stage technology that is supposed to imitate the baby more. I think Medela is the only brand that my hospital's lactation center sells. If you go to the Medela website (3w's.medela.com) then you can read about them and research which pump would be best for you.

i did alot of research and i have purchased the Ameda Purely yours. It is the only fda approved breast pump also. I also contacted La leche (sp?) to find out thier opinion of this pump prior to my purchase and they gave it high marks, I havent used it yet since my baby isnt here yet.

yes they did say medela was the best.... but we went to this baby fair, and dr.brown, playtex had their stalls. and i liked both those, but we are buying dr. brown's.

I've heard medela is the best, but expensive. I use the avent ISIS manual and I love it.

MommyMeg07 - March 31st, 2007 9:04 PM

My hospital suggested the Medela Pump in Style. I go to the lactation class there whenever baby is having problems breastfeeding, and EVERY woman there has the Pump in Style and loves it. I just bought mine, and have only used it once, but I didn't have any problems.

I purchased the Medela in style from the hospital and am not very impressed. I am calling Medela, maybe it is defective.

I used th Medela Pump in Style when my son was born 4 years ago and had no complaints - it was the one the hospital recommended and could handle all the pumping I did when I went back to work

Carly67 - April 3rd, 2007 11:47 AM

It is funny when I had my daughter who I breastfed for almost a year the only breast pump I had was the manual one the hospital gives you and the same with my son who was born 21 months later. With my third I remember having an electric pump but cannot recall using it. I either used the manual or I self expressed when needed. However with this my fouth I just bought the Playtex Petite electric breast pump which is like the Playtex Embrace. It had good reviews but I have not used it as I am due to deliver this week.

I can't decide between the Medela Pump N Style or the AVENT Duo ISIS iQ (may have description in wrong order-?) I emailed the lactation consultant at my OB's office and she said that she had not heard any negative comments about the AVENT, she recommended the Medela PIS or PISA. She has used both (has 4 kids) and she has several clients who are very satisfied with the Medela products. AVENT does sell an adapter so that you can pump directly into AVENT bottles even with Medela. I will probably go with the Medela PISA, but I would be very interested to hear from some one who has used both an electric pump from AVENT and a Medela electric pump to see what their preference is.
