How much weight can I expect to lose after I deliver? I know the baby will weigh around 7 lbs. but what about the rest? I have gained 34 lbs with 2 weeks to go. I can't gain any more weight!!!!!

I think it all depends. They say you will lose quicker if you breastfeed! I'm gonna try it. Just eat healthy and remember the baby puts on the weight during the last part of pregnancy. Best wishes to you.

Everyone keeps telling me to expect to lose 15+ pounds in the first week or so, considering you'll be losing excess fluid, blood, etc.

I have also heard to expect to lose 15-20 lbs the first week. That is a relief to hear, eh? :-) Yes, and breastfeeding will help with the weight as well... help us get our shape back a little quicker.

A friend of mine who had her baby in July lost 31 pounds at 6 weeks after delivery.

Remember that the placenta weighs as much as the baby does, plus there is a ton of water weight you will lose in the first day or two. I had a 10 lb baby and went home from the hospital about 25 lb lighter. I did gain a total of 45 lb, so I still had quite a bit of work to do after I recovered!

my friend put on 20 kilos during her pregnancy, same as me, and lost 12 kilos in 24 hours after the birth, peeing and peeing

when i had my first baby, i gained 27 lbs, and lost 19 when i delivered, with my second i only gained 9 lbs, but lost 15 when i delivered. I think it depends on each individual woman

JL, everything I've read says the placenta only weighs in at like 1.5 - 3 pounds, not as much as the baby. Is that right?

J - September 28th, 2005 8:30 AM

Thats what I thought.

Placenta weight as much as the baby around 8 lbs, 8 lbs are extra fluids in your body, breast and everythig else. I am 33 weeks and so far i have gain 19 lbs. I am not sure if after delivery you lose all those lbs.

j - September 28th, 2005 10:27 AM

I hate to burst your bubble but the placenta doesn't weight 8 lbs and it doesn't weigh as much as the baby. It only ways 2-3 lbs like the other gals said. Otherwise you might as well be having twins...hehehehe

Heidi - September 28th, 2005 11:05 AM

That's what I read too. Placenta is only a couple lbs. They say besides the baby's weight you lose around 10 lbs from the placenta and all that extra fluid and so on. My sister-in-law said she peed non-stop for a week afterwards as she retained fluid really bad and she lost a lot. I hope that's my case cus I feel puffy all the time and I've gained like 40 lbs in 37 wks!!!!

KLM - September 28th, 2005 11:23 AM

I am 31 weeks and lost a lb this week, so I've gained 6 lbs thus far...saying that I still think I'm going to have a big baby, don't know why its jsut my feeling but is it possible to go home from the hospital weighing less than you did prepregnancy?
