i am 39 weeks, 3 days along. i am fed up, severely anemic, exhausted, i can only get out of bed to go to the bathroom and even that kills me, my blood pressure keeps messing me with me on and off, i feel hugeeee - how can i convince the hospital that i need a c-section? I am planning to head to the ER early in the morning (after this god-awful heatwave). I don't have a doctor, I had a midwife who left us over a week ago because she finally admitted she isn't certified, so i dont have a doc or anything to talk to about a c-section. How can i get that c-section? i feel too weak to deliver normally and im afraid they wont care and tell me to just go home when i get to the ER. what do i need to say to get one? thanks...

Hey Anne, where are you from, I'm in St. Louis and this heat wave SUCKS! I'm 32 weeks along and stay inside all the time!
I've heard of many women scheduling a c-sec, it's your body so you have the option of doing what you want, you may not be able to get in tomorrow morning, but your doc may be able to get you in later in the week. The only reason I would think he would reject you having a c-sec is if your pregnancy is progressing ok and he's against c-sec unless they're absolutely necessary, that's how my doc is and I like it since I'm trying to avoid one at all costs! but you sound like your having a horrible time! It's worth a whirl!

Anne what did you plan on doing if you went into labor naturally since you don't have a doctor? You should just find a doctor and tell them what happened and what is going on. Make an appt today someplace that will take you. Do you have insurance? My friend was induced a few days before her due date because she was so miserable. I would maybe try making an appt somewhere and tell them how much pain you are in and maybe they will just induce you...

anne - July 26th, 2005 10:43 AM

the hospital told me that they will assign me to one of two groups if i dont have a doctor. what i want is to say something, anything, that would warrant an emergency c-section. i don't want to wait around and debate it with them. i do agree its our body, but i have a bad feeling

Maleficent - July 26th, 2005 10:57 AM

personally i think it's a bad idea to lie to the doctors to get what you want. you've most likley had crappy medical care up untill now from an unqualified midwife, why add more issues?

Christina - July 26th, 2005 10:57 AM

You do sound like you are having an awful time. I am actually kind of surprised that since you are having problems with your blood pressure that they haven't induced you, but since you don't have a regular doctor that is why you are not getting the personal attention you need. I would have to say that it will be difficult to find a doctor that will do a c-section for no reason. Unless maybe you tell them you are in horrible pain, but once they get you hooked up to the moniters they will be able to tell that there is no reason for an emercency c-section. What an awful situation you are in!! I feel for ya! hey leahp, I was watching the weather channel yesterday and I didn't realize St Louis got that hot!!! I am in Florida and I thought it got bad here!!!

Christina - July 26th, 2005 11:06 AM

So Anne, are you seeing anyone on a weekly basis? Seems like if you have anemia and are having as hard a time as you say, you need to be seeing a doctor anyway!

Leahp - July 26th, 2005 1:00 PM

Oh yea! This humid air is killer, it makes for a fun pregnancy!

anne - July 26th, 2005 6:51 PM

I haven't been seen since my 37th week when my so-called-midwife flaked out on us. Maleficent - actually, i am quite ill, but i keep thinking they won't bother to do anything and just send me home, making it all worse. I am severely anemic and have no energy to be sent there and home then back again. I was just wondering what i can say to get a c-section so i can start recovering from this agony. Christina - The best i can do is tell them i see spots, have blurry vision, blood pressure spikes, etc - which i do have. Reading up and finding out that they are signs of pre-clampsia.. so we'll see what the hospital wants to do. I am just so afraid they will ship me back home to wait it out. As far as seeing someone weekly - i am disabled and trust me i have tried to get a doctor to check in on me, no luck. Most offices don't want to bother, since i don't have a steady prenatal history with a doctor already. It really sucks. I'm really glad i can post on this site, because i feel totally without support in my area here. Cant ask a doctor's office anything here without getting the 3rd degree or getting ignored.

If you have a c-section and you're anemic, you're more likely to need a blood transfusion. I don't know of anything you can say to get a c-section right away. I think if you invented an emergency, they'd hook you up to fetal monitors and check for themselves. It's really scary that your midwife wasn't certified. With high blood pressure and anemia your midwife should have had you seeing a doctor too.

anne - July 26th, 2005 7:08 PM

JBear - Tell me about it. She was a very pro-natural "midwife", carried around videos that showed hospital horror stories, convinced us that doctors only "seek what is wrong with you, not what is normal". I am told i will need blood now no matter how i deliver the baby. I hae a phlebotomist friend who came by to take blood and after she drew three vials i was up for 4 hours clinging to the toilet (tmi), and i could see my heartbeat in my eyes - in the dark, if that makes sense. The next day i was shocked to discover my red blood count is 2.5! and my hemoglobin is 8.6 - if under 8, a blood transfusion is necessary pregnant or not. RBC under 2.0 can cause stroke/heartattack - yet my midwife insisted with some nettles and yellow dock i would be ok - never suggesting a doctor, telling me it was alllll ok. to add to that, my iron levels are toxic, so when i complained to her that i felt very ill taking the yellow dock, she ignore me - turns out the crap she fed me raised iron levels. Ahhh sorry to go on. I am pretty upset about this whole thing and i'm not sure how it will turn out now.

Audrea - July 26th, 2005 10:52 PM

If you are that bad off with your blood levels that low you should go to the ER already. It seems that they might would want to do a transfusion before you deliver. That is so low, even if you were not pregnant, that level could be fatal. I would not wait around if I were you. I'd already be at the hospital. If your levels are really that low, they have to treat you now for the low blood levels at least. Do you realize that could kill you during labor being so low due to blood loss if your uterus decides to take too long to clamp down on all the blood vessels from after the placenta comes out, or before even. Some women with a mild case of anemia need transfusions due to blood loss when the uterus has problems. This is not something you should wait on.

Other than how tired you are, why would you want a c-section rather than to try and do it naturally? I also agree that with your blood pressure and anemia you should be induced asap. Try going to the ER, explaining your problem and asking them to help you with finding a doctor. They are usually able to help with something like this. Then you can get a doc to check you and hopefully induce. With your bp and anemia putting you and baby at risk, I would honestly be suprised if they didn't just induce you once you went to the hospital.

Let me start with i really feel for you.I'm in oklahoma and the weather here has been a killer as well.I have gallstones and that has been really rough.I am lucky to have a good doctor that has listened to my problems and will induce me next week b/c we are afraid that when i go into labor i will have a gallstone attack and i don't think i can handle having an attack and dealing with contractions at the same time. They take everything from me and i don't think ill have the energie to deal with labor.Since inducing is tougher on the body we are trying to time it so that my body is getting ready to go into labor but doing it soon enough that i will not go into labor by myself.it also takes 45 minuted to get to the hospital.I would suggest in your situation to go tonight to the ER and explain and tell them you can't handle it any longer and tell them about your midwife. My doc adviced me against c-section if at all possible.I know it sounds easier you justlay there,no long hours of labor and contractions and pushing, just some cutting and sewing up and you have a baby, but the after effects are not going to be nice. You will still have contractions afterwards because your body will do that automatically,c-section is against nature. It will also take a lot longer for your uterus to shrink to its normal size.So long term wise you will spend more time recovering, with a vaginal birth it may take longer but you will be done. You go in,make them listen to you and since you are this far along they may induce you.Take care and let us know what happened.

Jbear - July 26th, 2005 11:56 PM

I had my daughter at 36 weeks because of blood pressure issues. They put me on magnesium sulfate (IV) to prevent seizures from the blood pressure, and tried for a day and a half to induce my labor. I ended up with a c-section because my body just wasn't ready to go into labor. I lost patience with them trying to break my water, and told them to either give me a darn c-section or let me go home for another week or two, but I wasn't letting even one more person stick a hand up there. I'm sure I would have ended up with a c-section no matter what, because I hadn't dialated at all or had a single contraction, but I don't know how much longer they would have kept trying to induce if I hadn't told them that was it. I think between your blood pressure issues and the anemia your best bet would be to go to the hospital and have them take a look at you. Something should be done to that midwife, too. I wonder if it would be possible to file charges against her for impersonating a medical person? I'm sure there's a more technical term for it...but the truth is she was playing with your life. If she wasn't certified, she must have been planning on you having a home birth, with potentially disasterous results. It's good that she's gone, so you can get the care you really need. Keep us posted on how you're doing...I'm worried about you.

anne - July 27th, 2005 2:59 PM

thank you all for your advice. i plan to head to the hospital tomorrow morning early. spoke to the director there who says she will help things along, which i am grateful for. the midwife finally gave us the rest of the 1400.00 she tried to take for herself, and we plan to report her to the medical board. we will be working with the hospital as well against her, since she had showed up there previously to help as a doula with other clients. she deserves everything she is about to get. I am told i can use my own dialup at the hospital so i will be here at some point to post. i feel really scared and uncertain, but i am very grateful to be able to speak to you guys like this. it helps me to know im not alone, seriously.

baby.ksh49.com - July 27th, 2005 3:52 PM

Glad to hear that they're going to help you out. Also happy you're taking steps against this "midwife" Happy she flaked on you and wasn't the one to deliver the baby !!!!
