I am in the exact same situation right now. At 30 weeks, I went to the Dr and complained of a lot of pressure in my pelvis (which I had been expericing for a couple of months by that point, but it was getting worse). Upon examination, she discovered my cervix was short and soft, so she sent me for a cervical ultrasound. My cervix measured 0.9 cm and I was immediately admitted to hospital on bed rest and given the steroid shot (and another 24 hrs later).
A week later, they did another u/s and said there was no change. I was sent home, and am still on bed rest (I am now 33 weeks). The pressure is getting worse and has now spread to my vagina. At this point, there's not much more anyone can do.
The good news is that after 32 weeks, the baby's chance of survival is the same as full term, but he/she may need some assistance with breathing if born early. Obviously, every additional day helps the baby grow bigger and stronger in preparation for the outside world.
A very good friend of mine is a physician, and he assured me that this is more common than you would expect, and everything your Dr and mine have advised is correct. There is no proof that bed rest can prevent premature delivery, but there's obviously no harm. All one can do is take it easy, relax and try to enjoy every bit of sleep possible before the big day.:)
I hope everything works out for you!
