Rylee (almost 4) has to have a VCUG procedure done on Monday because she had a UTI a couple months back. I was just wondering if anyone else's toddler has been through this? And if so, how did they handle it? Were they sedated? I've read online that you usually have the option to sedate the child if you don't think they will tolerate the procedure, but my Dr. didn't mention it. I will be calling tomorrow to ask. I was just curious to know if anyone else has been through this and how the whole ordeal turned out? Thanks!

OMG!!!! i dont want to scare you but this is a horrible thing to watch your child go through my 18 mo old (now 20 mos old) had it done and she WASNT sedated and i so wish she had been she was too young to understand what was going on and to be held down to have the cath put in was horrible then for the actual test i had to leave the room ( i was preggo with baby brother and due to the X-ray i couldnt stay in the room) so while she screamed in the room i paced the hall right outside the door crying my eyes out .......she dont remember it now and i still get teary eyed thinking about that day so now it is harder on me .....and that day is one i never want to re-live......maybe since yours is older and can understand what is happening she will be OK with it.....but my LO was to young to understand good luck to your LO and to you

Thanks for responding! unfortunately this hospital doesn't do sedation either, so I'm really worried. I've explained to Rylee what is going to happen, and that I will be right there beside her the whole time. But she is very dramatic anyway, then to add the pain of it all into the mix really worries me. We go in early tomorrow morning, and I'm just hoping it all goes smoothly. If she doesn't cooperate, they may recommend we go to the other hospital that DOES do sedation. We'll see. So sorry your little girl had to go through that! I know she must have been terrified!!

For the most part it went good. She was really scared when they had to put the catheter in, but once they were done she was good. But the hardest part for her was peeing on the table. She DID NOT like that. She kept crying that she wanted to go to the toilet! lol. i felt so bad for her. But she got tons of stickers and a pair of purple medical gloves from the docs for being such a good sport. I also took her to the store and let her pick out a My Little Pony toy and let her have ice cream for breakfast. It was the least I could do for making her endure that! ; ) We should get the results back in 1-3 days.. so hopefully we get good news!

Just wanted to let you know the Dr called on Monday and said everything looks perfect. Whew! Thank goodness! So Rylee is nice and healthy, and hopefully we won't have any more UTIs to worry about!

this is such a yucky thing for our little ones to have to go through! I know. My 2nd dd had a UTI at 3 1/2 mo old and freaked us out...she didn't have any symptoms but a very high temp, which led us to the E.R... she ended up getting a very bad bilat kidney infection that almost caused bacterial meningitis, due to the ecoli bacteria going from her kidnies to her blood stream. She was in the hospital for 4 days 3 nights and then on IV antibiotics for 28 more days...ugh! Very very scary and hard to believe (my 1st dd NEVER had issues with any uti's)... well, then my little one had to have the VCUG done and they found that the urine was backing up into her kidnys and was a level 3 urinary reflux. She is on a low does of an antibiotic EVERY single night until she out grows it or needs surgery (hopefuly she will out grow it!)... but she will need to have a VCUG done every year to see if things are gone or improving...I am so not looking forward to November, when she is due to have her second VCUG done! I am scared that it will be worse on her since she is older now. When she was 4 mo old (the first time the VCUG was done) she did really well and just didn't like the "full bladder" feeling, but did ok. If anyone has to go through one, I STRONGLY suggest going to a hospital that is a Children's hospital, because they do this all the time and they know how to do it well... also, the environment is geared to kids and more friendly!!!! Our children's hospital was WONDERFUL!!!! I wont go to the closer hospitals as they are not as prepared for little ones nor do they do the procedures often enough to be really really good at them with the little ones. Best of luck to anyone having to go through this. Glad that the outcome for many of you is a good outcome!
