I am thinking about getting on the shot and I need sme advice!! My first choice is Mirena but our insurance wont cover it, and I got pregnant on the pill. One of my main concerns is the weight gain associated with the shot. I am already overweight and cannot afford to gain a ton of weight. Is anyone on the shot and did you gain alot of weight? Were there any other terrible side effects fom the shot? Thanks!!!

I had the shot for 4 years, and didn't gain weight with it all. I spotted for the first 3 months and then after that, never had a period since it wears down the lining. However, when we decided to start trying for #1, I had been off the shot for 1 year and had started getting regular periods after 7 months off of it. We got pregnant, and miscarried twins at 13 weeks. Then it took us 6 more months to get pregnant again, miscarried at 6 weeks. Then immediately got pregnant again the following month and that one stuck and we have our beautiful DS who's now 16 months. They never said the shot was the cause of the miscarriages, I have a lack of progesterone in my body, but I know that the shot wasn't the best option for me. I never will take a hormonal birth control shot again. The trouble is you can't just stop it once you get it, it's in your system for 3 months. I looked into the Mirena as well but my insurance doesn't cover it either and it's pricey! Just talk to your doctor and see what they think. Wish you well!

I am not on it now, but have been in the past, and my experience wasn't all that plesant. It made me so moody! I am usually a very happy person, but I actually got very depressed on this shot. We're talking about crying over nothing, calling ex-boyfriends and talking their ears off, not my normal behavior. It worked great at preventing pregnancy, I didn't get pregnant, but please ask your doctor about the side effects, like mood swings.

I know this forums kinda old, but there now saying that the shot isnt good on your bones(something about it eats away at them), I was on it for 6 years, I did gain about a maximum of 20 pounds in that time frame which isnt bad for being on it for 6 years, although I came off of it in 2006 and decided to take the pill and ended up getting pregnant and having a miscarriage at 20 weeks, then got pregnant again a month later and was successful and now have a 2 year old son, I tried to get back on the shot but they wouldnt allow me because I was on it for so long in the past, they tried the IUD which def. wasnt for me, all I did was cramp with it, I also had really bad cramping on the shot and they couldnt figure out why, I just delt with it, it was a once a month thing, I didnt have any periods and I couldnt get pregnant, a girls dream...lol I would def. look into other options that you have, just remember not everyones bodys are the same. I am now pregnant with baby #2 and the only birth control method im using after the baby is born is the hubby getting chopped...lol
