So today my ds Mason (20 months) had his most recent ear infection check up. The Dr. is concerned because although there isn't an actual infection there is still fluid in the ear and he has a sinus infection. She was also concerned because of his speech delays. He just isn't proressing like he should be. I know cognitively he is okay and I know he can hear us but I think with all of the fluid in his ears he's having a hard time. Pretty much all he says is mama, dada, bye bye, ,ball, puppa (puppy), Papa (my dad) and I want that. He might say a couple of other words but I can't think of any right now. He used to say up and all done but he rarely says those anymore. Has anyone else gone through this? Not sure what to expect at the ENT appt. He's only had 5 ear infections but they have all been since March which I guess is a pretty short period of time to have had 5 infections.

I had tubes put in my dd's ears 1 week shy of her 5th bday. If I had it to do over again, I would have done it WAY earlier. I'm glad that your ped is referring him because for some reason they don't like to. Anyway, when they did her hearing test before deciding to put the tubes in, they said she had minimal loss but loss nonetheless. If they tell you that tubes are necessary, don't worry. It will be the best thing you could do! It's a breeze, both for you and the baby. And the best is no more infections. :O}

None of mine ever had ear problems, but saying words and then not saying them anymore is normal. My kids went through that, too. I guess they were just focusing on other things. Also, 20 months is pretty young and lots of kids aren't saying much at that age. Leah didn't start talking (other than her handful of words) until after her 2nd b-day and then it kind of all came at once and within a few months she was speaking in pretty clear sentences... but since Mason has trouble with his ears it's probably better safe than sorry that he's seeing the specialist. gl

my son got ear tubes this past march (13 months). from september 06 to february 07 he had 9 ear infections, strep, and RSV. He hasn't been sick since gettin ghte ear tubes. He still isnt talking much, but I noticed a huge change in his balance when walking and sitting (especially early in the morning) and he seems to understand ALOT of what we say. He now says 5 words, where as he wasnt even saying anything at the time of the surgery.
