My dd has major problems with all types of solids and I'm getting concerned. She has been nursed since she was born and is 12 months now. She has a problem gagging on any new solid she tries and I guess has upset herself by this that most times she just throws any new food on the floor. According to everything I read she should be able to eat small bite-sized solids. I've tried tofu, shredded cheese, watermelon, every jar food imaginable, avocado, pureed and shredded meat WITH gravy, egg yolk, pureed red beans, small chunks ripe fruits, tiny bits of chicken and pork, you name it. She is NOT Interested. I've tried both leaving it on her high chair tray and feeding her. She seems to only be interested in nursing. She will eat puffs, oatmeal cereal, shredded pieces of bread, and the cheddar goldfish broken up. She does tend to gag on the puffs or goldfish if I don't break them up. She has also recently begun to throw a fit when I try to put her in her highchair. I have been able to get her to eat many of the jar pureed fruits and couple of the jar vegetables. I'm hoping that this is not an indication of motor skill problems, reflux or a constricted esophagus. Anyone heard of this type of behavior? I"m a big fan of nursing but after a year old she is going to need more than just my milk. Also, she is not skin and bones and has been well above the 50% P for her weight. (P.S. this is an example of one of mommy concerns per my OTHER question on this forum)

:) The weight gain is a good indicator that she is thriving. Though it is slightly strange that no solids. 8 months was when my kids started eating pieces of normal food. But then again kids are different. Her body will need more than milk soon, I would give it some more time and see. Kids will not starve themselves. Some older kids wouldn't eat their food and their mothers make them sit by their plates forever - but I believe in body self-regulation, especially in kids who rely on their instincts in what and how much they need, unlike us who learned to finish our plates whether we need it or not. I kind of tried to preserve this instinct in my kids, so unfinished plates is a non-issue in our house.

Have you consulted her pedi about this? That would be the first place I would go before freaking out. They may have some suggestions for you too. My kids all could eat solids really well by one year. My dd was a little more easily to choke then both of my sons were, but still she could eat most things that were soft and cut up small. I do agree with in the woods though. I made many mistakes with my first, I guess because I didn't have a clue of what I "should" be doing. I always would make him finish his plate because I thought that was the right thing but he now is overweight and I really think it contributed. With my younger son I never forced the issue with him, I have always just let him eat until he said he was done and that was it. He is at a very normal weight. A unfinished plate is not a bad thing, thier little bodies will tell them what they need. Also if you started solids late she will also take longer than babies that started solids early will to adapt to the new textures. Just keep offering it and keep an eye on her weight and I am sure she will be fine. Have you tried the Gerber Graduate dinners, they are tastey and very soft and easy to eat, she may like those, 3rd foods help them learn to mash with thier gums and get use to the texture. Just keep offering!
