Hello, just wondering how many words your babies could say at 16 months? My dd tends to point or grunt for anything she wants. She does have a handful of words she uses commonly. I'm not really concerned she says more than my second son did at her age and he is fine, but was just curious where she is on the scale. Thanks Ladies!

Of course you know every baby is different, and my ds1 was saying about 10 words at 16 months.

Thanks DDT, I think she says about 10 words, just not all the time. Like she was saying door all the time and now I never hear it.

dd never says her words regularly, i never know when to officially say it is her first word definately, lol. I suppose if i had to go with her first sounds, it'd of had to been mama then yeah. She doesn't say them regularly either so. Sometimes it sounds like she can say " mama" "mom" " dada" "papa" "nana" "hi" "yeah",that's about all i can think of. She usually just points a lot as well. But she's just 13 months now, thought i'd add an answer in anyway.

Thanks Jenna. You know just when you start to worry about something they turn around and just do it. The other night I was in the kitchen and she just came in and plainly stated "banana" I think banana is a little hard to say so I am sure she will get the hang of speech soon enough.

My 17 month ds has always been a huge talker (which is good since he is not a walker yet...lol)...he's working on that. I really would have to say he knows well over 25 words right now and he knows the alphabet A-J, M, P, R, V, T and says mama, dadda, nanny, bye bye, ok, ball, hi, hello, yeah, no, tasty, tree ,alligator (that's a crazy one), banana, airplane, yogurt (which he pronounces gogurt), hands, hair, foot, fly, prayers, amen, nite nite and honestly, the things he says I don't think are the norm for his age and even our pedi thinks he might be gifted in that department, BUT like I said, the trade off is that he does not yet walk! He never crawled either. He is just starting to cruise a little....it just goes to show how differently kids develop. Some kids are ahead in the language, but behind in gross motor and visa versa. I have stopped reading any developmental milestones at this point because I have stressed myself out so much with him not walking that I was ignoring the excitement of all that he does with talking...lol I give up. When he's ready he will do it. Until then...he just wants to talk, talk and talk some more. It sounds like your lo is right on track though. Gee, after reading my long winded novel I just wrote it is no wonder all my kid does is talk...lol He is taking after his mommy...hahaha

Wow,bannanna is a big word!! lol. good for her!! I'd be shocked if out of nowhere my l.o. said that. eclectic, that is good for a boy to know all those words, i thought girls were supposed to be quicker in this department to.

Ya, I thought so too, but I guess my ds just wants to be different...lol

Hi my daughter has just turned 16 months and she can say about 15 words at the moment, she also started walking unaided at around 11 months.

Mariefe - February 24th, 2009 11:12 PM

Hi! My DD has started to walk on her own at age 13 and a half months old. Now she is almost 16 months and can say many words already and always points at things she wants. She can say daddy, walter (her dads name but with silent l&r), dirty, car, cow, book, turtle (as tutu), go, rice, papaye (as papaya), bye, boat, close, ball (as baw), juice, bird, bath, one and two. Often she surprises us with her new words. We'll she can say many words now but still cant figure out how to say mommy or mama to me.. Babies are so funny learning and pronouncing their new words:).
