My dd (21 months) has mosquito bites the size of golf balls with clear weeping blisters in the center of them. It seems like quite an extreme reaction to a mosquito. We put on a topical benedryl which seems to be relieving her a little bit. But have any of you ever had your lo have such an extreme reaction to bites? I assume I will just have to be very cautious about her and bug bites from here on out? Any hope her reaction will be less over time?

That is an extreme reaction. You know it is possible to be allergic to mosquito bites. My nephew is allergic and the doctor has him on cortisone when he gets bitten. I would take your daughter to see a doctor while the bites are still big and nasty. Often they don't take you seriously until they see it! I guess you'll have to make sure she wears bug repellent during the bad months.

oh my ds reacts to bug bites that way too well maybe not that bad but they get huge and it takes days for them to go away and that sucks we live in fl and they are bad here!! I am not sure what to do I guess i am gonna have to get some kind of repelent that is baby safe any one know of any?

wow, that is bad. I would freak! I'd do what cendres said and take her in while she's got one. Are you sure it's not poison oak? Just a thought....

We just moved and are an hour from our pediatrician. The records are in the process of being transferred so I am not sure what to do since the new doctor does not have the records yet. We have a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who lives across the street. So I took her over there and she said it is definately bug bites and not poison oak/ivy. I guess they could be getting infected so she said to use bacitracin on them. She didn't seem to know much more except that some kids get cellulitis from bug bites and need antibiotics. The benedryl ointment has shrunk them sigificantly since I put it on. They are still huge and red but the weeping part is now scabbed up a bit. This is all in the past 24 hours. It just sucks, now I am so afraid of her getting bug bites and just two days ago we were so carefree playing in the yard. I guess I should have driven her to the pediatrician before I put the benedryl on but it was a Sunday and she was miserable. If she gets any more hopefully the records will be transferred to her new doctor and I will be able to get her right over for him to look at. I can't imagine if she ever gets bitten on her face!

My dh's little cousin has some kind of medical disorder that makes him react to mosquitoe bites like you describe. He isnt allergic to them.. but he has an actual disorder.. he was diagnosed when he was 18 months old... he has to be on medication of this all the time.. because the mosquitoe bites can make him quite ill. I hope everything works out for you. ~Kristin~

My son gets these huge blackfly bite marks - though not the size of a golf ball, but with weeping centers, too - every spring. They say, one has to have few first painful blackfly bites and after that your body would get less sensitive. That what

Oops, will try again. My son gets these huge blackfly bite marks - though not the size of a golf ball, but with weeping centers, too - every spring. They say, one has to have few first painful blackfly bites and after that your body would get less sensitive. That's what happened to him last year - he got better after several huge red bite marks. Blackflies here are worse than mosquitoes. Hopefully, you dd's reaction is her body adjusting to the new invaders, and she'll get better eventually.

My ds did that when he was small also, it would freak me out! His were always the size of golf balls or bigger and wept. The first few times I was scared of spider bites but it was always mosquitos. Once he got bit right above the eye brow and his whole eye swelled shut. After the first 5 or 6 times of running to the Dr or ER, I was reassured every time that it was simple bug bites and that sometimes smaller children have more violent reactions than older kids and will grow out of it. He's almost 9 now and when he get's bit it looks like a normal bite. Just always use bug spray if you are going to be out doors very much and ointments like neosporin worked wonders to clear them up.

My daughter has the same thing!! They have taken for ever to heal. The nurse told me that some kids just react differently, and the bites swell more than others. My daughter's bites are from black flies. I have been putting Kids After Bite on them, and they seem to be going away.
