Molars Before Cuspids??

I was a dental assistant for 10 years before becoming a sahm of two. Some babie's teeth come in different than the "norm". It is nothing to be concerned about. The cuspids will come through, it will just take time. You have to remeber too that with the molars there is more surface area pushing through than with the cuspids, and once they start they are constantly being bitten down on by the tissue on the upper. The pressure and the constant irritation most likely has helped them to cut. The cuspids however, have only one contact point with the lower tissues, and thus less "help" cutting. As far as the discomfort, if you wet a washcloth, put it in the fridge to cool and give it to him it can be really soothing to chew on if he is interested. Frozen peas are also great. They just turn to mush in their mouth as they thaw. Our pediatrician recommended frozen peas when our daughter was teething and she loved it. I hope this helps. |

Oh wow! That's good to know and makes a lot of sense now that you explained it :-) Thank you! I will definetly try out the frozen peas and washcloth! I felt so bad for him because all this time I have been putting orajel in the wrong spot thinking it was his cuspid area and all this time it's been his molars ;-( poor baby |

According to most websites most kids will see that order... canines are usually last for many kids. |

I have also read that the cuspids are the last teeth to come in along with the 2nd year molars. My ds1 is 21 months and those are the teeth we are still waiting on. He also got his molars (4 of them) at 17 months. Ouch! it was a rough 1.5 weeks. Major diarrhea, crankiness and a low-grade fever. Good Luck! |
