My little boy who is 2 1/2 is doing very well! He is a very bright little boy! The only thing I worry about is his speech. He has started talking more and more but is he behind? I know he's not advanced but is he normal? I've asked his daycare provider if she thought so and she said no that he is on track with most of the kids in his class. Some moms have told me that boys really don't start talking until they hit 3. My son talks and talks but to somebody that isn't around him all the time sometimes they can't understand him and sometimes they can. Should I be worried? Should I wait it out til he's 3? Should I get him tested? My husband thinks he's fine but I'm still worried

I am a little confused by your question...does your son talk as in says words? or does he just talk gibberish? how many words does he say? is he putting together 3 word sentences? I think the major milestone for speech at this age is being able to put together at least 3 word sentences together (eg. Mama kick ball). My son is 2 years old and talks alot -probably knows up to 50 words if I had to guess - but when he talks a lot of his sentences and conversation is mixed with some random gibberish to. I think you should wait until his 3rd birthday to go and see your ped. Often there will be a burst in speech in a very short period. Try to encourage your son tell you what he wants before you give him something. And talk yourself...they are like a sponge at this age and learn lots from us. Reading helps promote language skills to. Good luck and try not to worry, I am sure everything is just fine.

At 2.5 it is perfectly normal to not be able to understand everything he says. In fact if he could speak perfectly clear he would be considered gifted. Sounds like he is right on track to me. Like DDT said it is more about how many words they can say and are they using 2 and 3 word sentences, not how clear their speech is. All kids are different and all talk at different paces. My oldest could say complete sentences by 2 years but my youngest son was only saying single words at a time by 2 years. My dd is 17 months and she can say alot of words but don't combine them into sentences yet.

Thanks yes he does say alot of words 50 for sure and yes he puts 3 word sentences together its just that you cant understand it all sometimes. I can understand him but people who are not around as much can and cant. Thanks I know it's prob fine but you know how moms can worry. Thanks for your input I greatly appreciate it!

I'll have to sat one more thing though. Does anyones child or has anyones child at 2 and a half say me want orange juice or and of course he'll say mine or my orange juice. Like Superman is flyman I cant get him to say superman but he does say things like Me go bye bye or mommy read me book. Is this normal?

Karen that sound very normal to me. Smart really if you think about it, flyman for superman, atleast he reconizes superman flies. Saying "me" instead of "I" is also very common, thats why when you hear a older child say "me" we correct them and tell them to not talk like a baby, because babies talk that way.

I think he's fine. There's a huge range of when children - both boys and girls - speak and how much. Both my DD and my DS could speak in small sentences before 2 but my brother didn't speak much at all until 3. My brother went on to get a First at University so I don't think how much they say now means that much and he talks constantly now. I wouldn't worry at all - he's fine.
