Did anyone catch the Oprah show today with Jenny Mccarthy? Jenny's son was diagnosed with autism and she swears what triggered it was the MMR vaccine---this has been a huge topic lately. Another woman on the show has a son who also has autism and she said that in 1999 when her son was diagnosed 1 in 3,000 boys were diagnosed with autism and today in 2007 1 in 97 boys are diagnosed--I was shocked by this number and I am scared to death. My son is 17 months old and received the MMR vaccine when he was 15 months old - I am also pregnant with another boy -- I am just so confused on all this...anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

Wow I didn't realize tthat the stats are 1 in 97 boys today. That's scary. All we want is to do the best for our child and sometimes what we do can hurt them.

Yeah, My son is not getting the MMR vaccine... He will get it but at 2 different times..... that's what most women do here is get the mmr about a month later.... I will have to fight with the nurse but I don't care, he is not getting all of those shots together....

My son had some shots when he was around 2-3 months old and I haven't ubdated them since. My personal choice is to wait until he is ready to start kindergarden to get his shots. I'm etremely paranoid about the whole Autistic epidemic. It seems like kids are being diagnosed around the 1-3 years age group. So maybe I can " bypass" it by waiting since they have to have these stupid shots to get into school. It is crazy how many children are being diagnosed as Autistic. No one really knows what causes it and that is the scary pasrt. Some folks think the vaccine is related. I have my suspicians and I do think that it is linked somehow, but I believe there has to be other factors involved. It seems that the more " advanced" we become as a society, the more mental and physical illness we have. Also, the fact that our diets these days is a far cry from a wholesome, nutrient rich diet our ancestors ate, and all this electrical technology around us, I think somehow were poisoning ourselves. Most people aren't aware that even if they eat a diet consisting of fresh produce, the minerals and vitamin content is up to 75% less than what is was 50 years ago. So even though we try to eat healthy, in fact we are still depriving our bodies all the necessary building blocks for opyimal developement. I think this has a connection to Autism. I don't think the cause of Autism can be linked to one thing. But it is scary to think we as a society might be responsible for Autism and not even know it!

I am so with you krc!! We as a society are poisoning ourselves. It's just everywhere and in everything. I was diagnosed with cancer (non-hodgkins lymphoma) last december. I was 25 at the time. Crazy! I'm in remission now, but I've become so aware of how unhealthy our world is. It scares the crap out of me to think of my dd being exposed to the poisons. I also don't think vaccines are THE cause of Autism... but that it may be a combination of factors. Whatever it is, I hope it figured out soon.

I dont know if this will help but a very high % are mis-diognosed!! they just brand them as autistic to save time. Also autism was around before the mmr jab was even around. I personally think that the parents of an autistic child just like to have something to blame it makes you feel better when you have something/someone to blame when unfortunate things happen.Even more so now that people have made the mmr jab and autism so linked everyone thinks if there child gets it, they auotomaticly got if from the MMR JAB. One other thing did they say what the stats were with children who have autism who have and havent had the jab?? i'd say it would probably be pretty even!! Just thought i'd give you my insite into this debate.

I do not have experience with any of my kids having autism but from what I've read lately it seems most articles say that the child will exhibit milder symptoms of autism before they go into full blown not talking to eye contact, etc. Most parents dont look for these symptoms until their child reverts into it full blown but a lot of parents look back and say "oh yeah I remember him doing this or that starting at this age or that age". So the child has autism- and most articles point toward it being in your genetics somehow but that something triggers the full blown onset of autism and a lot of people think vaccines, some other things point toward something in the environment, etc.
I'm not sure exactly what I think I just think we need to figure it out and find out why it's so much more common now! There's got to be a cause.

oh yes and it's terrifying to me. I have a boy that's about to be 3 and one that's about to be 1 and pregnant again. I think there's also got to be a reason why it's 4.3 to 1 boys to girls. It really is terrifying.

mrsfiveday - October 2nd, 2007 10:26 PM

The whole Autism thing is terrifying. I used to babysit a 2 yr old autistic boy, he was always tapping on everything, examining it closely, no eye contact, hated being held...the last time I babysat him, he scratched my face...he was only 2 and the signs were so strong. Now I am always over thinking everything my 15 month old son does.
