When did you first give your Lo's peanut butter? My ped is saying now to wait until 3 but some of the toddler books and my friends with older kids say that 1+ is okay. My dd is 14 months and she is really thin and I think peanut butter would be a good option for her on toast ect. but now I am scared with all the allergy stuff in the news. So when did you all first try peanut butter?

i tried last week with my ds who is almost 18.5 months. I tried it on toast a few times with him but he would just look at it and turn away knowing there was something other then his butter on it! SO at lunch one day i thought "well maybe a sandwich" i am having such a hard time gettinghim to eat anything now a days i thought " what the heck". he needs some sort of protien! I gave it to him and he liked it, he has had a peanut butter and jam sandwich twice now but he won't touch peanut butter on anything else or Jam? only together???? well i was happy and he has had no reaction to it at all. I made sure i had benedryl in the house just in case and watched him closely all day and the day after. so far so good, i will try again next week.
I was told to wait till 2 but then also if you have no peanut allergies in your family you can try earlier. so i decided to try earlier as we had no allergies in our family.

I also tried around 18 months - as did almost everyone I know. Someone on these boards a while back had suggested that if you're really afraid of peanut butter to rub a bit on ds's skin first, and see if anything happens. Then go ahead and give him a "small" lick, and continue from there. There are many other nut butters out there that are very good, high in protein and fat, but aren't peanut. Try almond butter. Also, for protein, try edamame (soy beans). My DD LOVES them. Buy them shelled and steam or boil them for about 4 minutes. They're a great on the go snack. And obviously milk, yogurt, etc have plenty of protein. Avocados are great for the fat - try spreading it on bread or just eating one whole. Good luck!

I have been giving him PB&J since he was about 15 or 16 mos old. He loves it. He is now 3 1/2 and I have had no problems. It is a good way to get the calories and fat into them...

haha i feel like a really bad mom....once he was able to eat some solids at like a year old i'd make him a peanut butter sandwhich. there was no peanut allergies in our families and i heard that the longer you keep your children from it the higher the chance they will develop an allergy to it.

I gave my ds a taste of PB on toast when he was 13 months old. We have no allergies what so ever on both sides of the family so there was no real fear of it for me. And when we did/do give it to him its a very light spread on toast.

When my 3 1/2 yr old turned 1 my ped said it was ok and I gave it to him shortly after. I know it's not recommended until 3 yrs now but with my second I also gave it to him shortly after he turned 1 and he was fine.

I first tried pb at 13 months. There are no allergies within the family so I felt it was safe. He has it almost everyday!

guccigal87 - May 20th, 2008 11:57 AM

i gave my ds pb at 8 months old... LOL we have LOTS of alergies in my family and lots of blood sugar disorders and pb is the only thing that like everyone can eat!! and he LOVES IT!! sometimes he just like pb on a spoon..

i gave my son peanut butter at like 5 or 6 months old and he was fine.. i think 2 yrs old is a little ridiculous.. and 3 yrs old thats just crazy

dizoney - June 25th, 2008 3:22 AM

it's not crazy if your child has an allergy that you don't know about and you discover that allergy accidentally. good luck

Is almond butter and other nut butters the same? I've seen them at whole foods and wanted to try them too, but scared. Ds is 1 and we have no allergies in either of our families.
