[Original Post]

My 2 year old has had a persistent cough for almost 3 weeks now! It all started on his bday when we had a pool party, he was only in the pool for a few minutes and wanted out and the next morning he had that cough, so I thought it was the pool. But he doesn't have any other symptom, no runny nose, no congestion, no fever, just coughing and coughing, mostly during the night while he is asleep and sometimes during the day. I gave him cough medicine for a week and nothing. So I took him to a doctor and he said it definately was not the pool, his lungs and heart sounded ok, no infection in his throat so he asked me if he drank a lot of coke and yes he did. We had coke everywhere on his birthday and my parents are also always giving him whatever he wants, always eating junk food and drnking soda. The doc said it was reflux and to stop giving him soda, avoid breads and cookies and gave me a cough medicine and medicine for the reflux and it has been almost a week and it has not gotten any better! He said the coughing should stop in 3 days and it hasn't. He has also been having lots of tantrums and waking up crying after his naps. I noticed he is getting 2 of his 2 yr molars but I dont know if it has anything to do with it. Anybody have any thoughts on this??

Oh, and I thought I might add that he doesn´t cough after running or anything, just mostly is spontaneous and out of nowhere.

I've noticed that coughs always, but always linger - they can take a long while to clear - even in me...My children can go a solid month with a cough...and no other symptoms...Its maybe more at night-time because his throat is dry? I've always been told certain coughs don't respond to medicine and it is simply a matter of time?! And I've also had a child who had a 'habit cough' - she just liked to cough - but yours doesn't sound like that...I would say it was from the pool - the air whatever but it will just take time...Waking from naps crying - probably the teeth, they can be sore to cut through...Tantrums? Well I hate to say it but he's at that age!! Joy! On a different note, soda is really bad for their teeth AND can be contributing to tantrums ...My brood are banned from the stuff except on special occassions because they just lose it when they drink the stuff...Infact my 13 year old has only been allowed to drink the stuff as he wishes - to an extent, haha - in the past year...GL

my dd has a cough all the time also (shes' 20 months). Since starting daycare in January she gets a cold/cough like once a month and the cough totally lingers for a while. Also, could your ds have allergies??? I dont know where you are located, but here in New York the allergy season has been pretty bad. My doctor insists that my dd is too young to have alleriges, but I have a feeling she has them. Sometimes I give my dd Childrens Benadryl and it helps with her cough and congestion, but I only give it to her once at night b/c it makes her sleep. Check with your doc or pharmacist though for the proper dosage based on his weight. I agree with iemc that the soda is really bad. Its totally your decision, but coke is loaded with sugar and caffine which isnt good at all for a 2 year old. My dd has never had soda (she has sipped ginger ale and hates it). She only drinks water and sometimes apple juice diluted with water, but mostly water. Anyway, hope he feels better

My DD almost 2 has had a cough for almost three months, comes and goes, I've taken her to the doctors ten times and he says everythings ok and NOT to give cough medicine. I agree with drea, it's totally your decision but all soda is so bad! one can of soda has 7 teaspoons of sugar...thats just gross. Soda is a reason why so many people are obese. My dd had a sip of soda by mistake and sip it out right a away...all she drinks is water and watered down real fruit juices. Hope you little one feels better soon!

I also agree that soda is bad, even for adults. I hardly drink any soda although sometimes I crave it but it doesnt do my stomache any good. I have told my parents but you know how grandparents are, whatever he asks from them they give him! So the other day I just told them, he has reflux, no more soda! At all.... and no cookies and junk food unless I say so... so I guess they got the picture. I also thought it could be allergies, but its weird that he has no other symptom, no congestion or anything.

Could be a seasonal asthma attack, check with your doctor. Could be asthma triggered by spring/summer allergens. My son had prolonged cough in winter (for about 3-4 wekks) - I think it was a seasonal asthma attack, triggered by cold weather.

Today he woke up with a runny nose and it sounds like he also has flems, after 3 weels of cough... Now Im more confused..

KimS - June 14th, 2008 8:31 PM

I would guess that it's asthma and that he's got allergies. My ds has a runny nose a lot, but he's not sick. Is the runny nose clear? or yellow/green? if it's coloured he's probably got a cold but if it's clear, there is no infection. My ds used to coughs a lot at night, initially this started in September and lasted until December, I then mentioned asthma, and my doc suggested we try an asthma puffer for a few weeks to see if it helped.... and it did!!! another thing that helps is elevating the mattress in his crib, sometimes if they have post nasal drip, when they lie flat it can cause them to cough. Just a thought to keep in the back of your mind. Good luck.

I took him to the ped yesterday and he says he has an infection. Apparently it started out as allergies, the mucus was draining from the back like if it were sinusitis, that is why there was no runny nose, just coughing. And it turned into an infection, well I am at least releieved that now I know what it is and now we are giving him medication for it.. My poor baby =(

I hope he gets feeling better soon, Fatima. My son is the king of those type of infections, but has done much better since getting ear tubes. I hope he gets some sleep and so do you! :)

My son had this. Exactly the same, cough with nothgin else, then congestion down the road and a runny nose. Dr. put him on an antihistimine, said he thought it was an allergy of some sort. Since hes taken it, he's been fine.

123abc - June 23rd, 2008 6:25 PM

every time my son starts coughing - i know it's an ear infection coming.. those suck.

Fatima - June 26th, 2008 12:39 PM

It was a throat infection, not an ear infection. But he has been taking his medicine and its almost completely gone. But yesterday he started with fever and vomit. Im thinking the vomit was because of his not feeling well because of the fever because he only vomited twice, but I dont know what could cause the fever. I called the ped and he just told me to give him some tylenol. It goes away and then comes back. He hasnt vomited again.
