My son is 21 months and is no where near ready to be potty trained. He still seems to young for that. I know every child learns at different paces, so I'm curious to know at what age did you start to potty train?

My dd had it all under control just before her 2nd birthday which was great as her little sister was born just after she turned 2. Anyway to be very honest (and its a bit embarassinng) she learned from seeing me use her "pippi pot" because when i was 7 months pregnant i peed in the little pot by my bed. I couldn't be bothered to go all the way to the bathroom 20 times a night : )

Hi krc. My son turned two in February and consistently pees on the potty throughout the day. He usually has one or no accidents. He is still in a diaper at nap and bed. That said, I didn't think my son was ready when we started around 23 months and he still doesn't tell us when he has to go. He had a severe rash that would not go away so we decided to put him in underwear so his rash would clear up and just try the potty. To our surprise, he had the ability to push out his pee on command. Have you tried the potty yet? You might try reading some potty books to him and maybe just give it a try. He might surprise you.

I was wondering the same thing. My son is 19 months and he knows when he is going. He just seems so little.

I introduced the potty to my daughter at 10 months by putting her on it before a bath or bedtime. By 14 months she was exclusively out of diapers, except for nap and bedtime. By about 19 months she completely stopped having any accidents (even the tiny bit wet underwear) and could wait a few minutes - for example, if we were in the car and couldn't pull over right away. She's 23 months now and everyone's shocked that she's toilet trained, but honestly I thought it was so easy. Of course every kid is different, but I believe if you act like it's just a natural part of life rather than an "event," they do the same. Having her watch me use the toilet helps a lot, too.

my ds is 18 months and we just bought a potty to try. he isn't ready, he never shows any signs or tells us but i thought i would just introduce it to him a few times a day and hopefully when he's ready it will click quicker????

my son doesn't show any signs either. Everytime he goes poop I always try to verbalize what it is by saying things like, did you go poo-poo? and while I'm changing his diaper I say poo-poo and stuff. Sometimes when he's running around naked he will pee on the floor and each time he just watches it like he is surprised. I'm a single parent so there isn't a male around for my son to watch. I just can't imagine my 20 month old being potty trained. I think it will be later in the year before I start potty training.

My dd started training at 27 months, and it was quite easy (she's always been ahead in her development, I swear I feel like I'm talking to a 8-10 year old now that she's 4). So I decided to try and see if my son could be trained at 18 months. He was running naked day, two, three, a week, two weeks, - no, he didn't care that he was wet and making puddles. The discomfort and some embarrassment are important indicators/tools in potty training, and my son was lacking them at 18mo. So I waited to the same age as we did with dd, 27 months, and he still was not showing any readiness. But at that point I knew it would be just harder to train if we waited into his 3rd year, we had a 3 yo boy neighbour who was having quite large (adult-sized) bm into his diaper. At 2.5yo a child still may not be embarrassed, but the discomfort definitely kicks in. It was a much longer process than with dd (reminded me of puppy training where you just have to go on without looking back). Months of wet clothes and public embarrassment later, his accidents ceased and he was fully trained. It took 6 months of gradual decrease in accidents.

You might be surprised. I would start trying to get him used to the potty, but don't force or push anything. Just let him go at his own pace. It may be awhile, or he may surprise you and take right to it. If he likes Sesame Street, the Elmo potty video did wonders for our potty training. It really got dd interested in using the potty.

I guess i could get a potty just so he's used to seeing one. Someone gave me one and I wasn't to fond of it and my son used it for a toy box,LOL. He doesn't watch any tv as I don't agree with it at this age. Plus he'd rather be outside or in the garage playing with tools. He isn't incomfortable in his diapers yet either. I'm not in a hurry or stressed about it, I know we'll start sometime in the near future. Thanks for you replies ladies!
