When did you (or do you plan to) stop using a soother and/or bottle with your child? DD is almost 17 months so I dread that it might soon be time to get rid of both.

By the time ds1 was 12 months old he was down to just a bed time bottle. We got rid of that one when he was 13.5-14 months old. We went cold turkey and it seemed to work best. Never had a soother issue...instead I have a thumb-sucking issue. He is almost 2 and still going strong. I've spoken with his pediatric dentist who said it's okay until they are 3.5-4 years old. Only advise she could give was to distract him with something else when he started sucking. The way my Mom got my little brother off his soother was to cut a hole in it. He didn't get any pleasure sucking from it and eventually tossed it away for good. He was about 18 months at the time.

My first I weaned at 12 months and both of my other two I took the bottle away at 12.5 months. Both of my boys were very attached to their paci and they were about 19 months before I finally just took it away, pretty much cold turkey. With my dd I didn't want the same problem so we only used hers for naps and bed and at 9 months I just stopped using it, she was perfectly fine without, no problems at all. They say after 18 months it can start to affect their teeth.

Thanks for the answers. We've been using a soother only for bed time and nap time since she was about 4 or 5 months. She self-weened so I was hoping she'd do that with night time too. Fat chance, eh? :P We're down to just a bottle in the morning and at night and she's losing interest in the morning bottle anyway. So neither seem like a huge deal but it seems every site recommends leaving both behind around 12-18 months.

My DD was weaned from a bottle at 10 months and was never given a pacifier.
