My son was circumcised at birth. I have always pulled back the skin to clean it at least once a day. Lately I realized that it didn't look like the skin was pulling back all the way...you can't see the ridge part of the head. When I tried to pull back harder my son, now 18 months, yelled ouch. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so what did you do about it? I've always emailed his doctor with the question, but just wanted some mom's stories.

I've always been told to NOT pull back the skin. It will retract on it's own later. Just wipe him clean but don't try to keep pulling it back.

I'm confused - did you mean to say that your son was NOT circumsized at birth?

No he is circumsized, but the skin flap is still their. The doctor said it would move back on its own and look "normal" by the time he is like 5. But he tells me to pull it back and clean him at least once a day.

Hmmm. Ok well I would say for sure don't be pulling it back if it hurts him.

My son was circumcised at birth, and I want to say he was about 4 or 5 years old before he looked like he was circumcised, like it took several years for the shaft to grow long enough to stick out. So I agree with the doctor saying he'll eventually look "normal" but I'm not sure about the pain issue. I never had that problem with my son, but I also didn't pull back the skin all the time to clean under it. Sorry I don't know how to advise you on that part.

When my first son was a baby he was very chubby and the skin would fold up around the top of his penis and his Dr. also told me to pull it down and clean under it. It never seemed to hurt him though. He is 10 now and although I haven't looked in a few years he was normal the last time I did see it. Sounds like maybe you are just pulling it down too far, I always just pulled it down a little, enough to see if it was dirty, and then just gently wiped. Both of my sons were circumcised and I only had to clean my first son because he was so chubby.

I had this same problem with my son, actually it wasnt a problem until his dr. pointed it out, my son was 20 weeks when the dr. noticed that his skin had reattached in some areas of the head, he advised me and my husband to keep pulling the skin back and eventually it will rip, might be a little painful and some bleeding, but to keep putting patrolium jelly or neosporen on it, until it is healed, we pulled a little at a time and did the neosporin and now it is completely normal looking, I would def. say it is ok to do, and dont worry if it takes a while to heal, my sons did, you just have to keep on it after every diaper change, and DO NOT USE baby powder while its healing! If you decide to do this, make sure that even after it looks healed to continue the neosporin or petrolum jelly for about a week after! We noticed that it was more comfortable and less painful to pull the skin back into place while bathing, he noticed it less than when we did it outside of the bath. Hope this helped!
