at dd's 15 month checkup appointment today she weighed less then before! She is just such a picky eater, i don't know what to do anymore,i've tried giving her smaller meals more often and also tried 3 meals, 2 snacks a day. i don't know what to do anymore. i even make her like a few different things sometimes which i read you shouldn't,so now i'll try not to. I tried not to obsess about it before when she only gained a little but now she weighs even less. the doctor just said give her more snacks. any ideas on how to get her to gain something? She also barely drinks her 1 glass of 2% milk, she's just not interested in it as much as breastfeeding. i usually give her a glass of it a day because i still breastfeed 3 x. would increasing the fat in my own diet help any?

I will probably get flack for saying this but she probably is too full because you are still breastfeeding. I know they do recommend it and I'm not saying you should quit but I would bet the milk is filling her up too much to be hungry for food. I just remember when my dd was still on the bottle and she didn't eat near as much food as she does now without the bottle. She is 18 months and has had just a sippy since she was 12 months. Just keep offering her food and if you feel comfortable with cutting out a breastfeeding then I think it would help.

Why are you giving her 2%? At 1 year old she should still be getting whole milk.

What foods have you tried, and how have you tried to feed her? What does she do with finger foods if you let her feed herself? What does she do if you try to spoon feed her, or try to let her spoon feed herself? Our DD is 18 months and eats only about half of the food that we like to eat. When she finds food she likes she eats well, but getting her to try new things is hard. And she still eats some jarred baby foods -- she doesn't like most real veggies so if she'll eat them this way what the heck. She often needed her own spoon to "help" -- at first it was just to hold but now she barely lets us feed her.

Well i just figured out i am suppossed to give her homo milk. At her 12 month appointment my pediatrician was saying to give her 2%.Then at 15 months he did say homo milk, i just figured it's the same thing and thought nothing of it. But i got to googling and i guess i'm suppossed to do homomilk afterall. Maybe that's my problem.I don't know why he said 2 % in the 1st place.Unless you are supposed to start with 2 %. i give her (or try to)yogurt, applesauce, bannannas, potatos, corn, peas, cheerios and a bunch of other stuff. I usually let her eat on her own. But sometimes i feed her while shes cruising because it bugs me that she won't sit down and eat, lol. probably not a good habit to get into. I also learned breastmilk is the fattest so maybe i won't cut that out. She has been eating better then normal the last couple days since i have been freaking about her loseing weight, oddly enough i'm not forcing her either. Maybe i'll add bm to other things to. It just feels so weird to of gave birth to a 9 lb 13 oz baby and she's just a little over double her birth weight now.

They really need the fat from whole milk right now. That could really help with the weight problem.

Malica - March 7th, 2009 12:39 PM

Whole milk will help, but if he's only drinking it once a day that's not the only reason.

Are you giving her lots of starches like bread and crackers? They're more calorie-dense than fruits and veggies and lots of kids love the texture at that age. We have a great little snack cup that has sort of flaps that keep food in but can easily be pushed out of the way by little fingers -- making it great for when we're out or when she's hungry between meals and doesn't want to stop tearing around the house to eat.

Malica - March 7th, 2009 1:12 PM

And meat too. Protein sources are very calorie dense too.

thanks,i'll try that. i'm going to try to pump more i never seem to anymore, maybe increasing my milk will help to.that way i can add it to food and give her a sippy of it maybe instead of homo milk since they say it's suppossed to be the fattiest.

How much does your dd weigh? How much did she lose? Did she get taller?

Everything you give your dd should be full fat: yogurt, milk. What are your mealtimes likes? Do you all eat together? Do you let her self feed? My ds loves putting harpooning his food with his toddler fork and then putting it in his mouth.
The snacking idea is a good one; I give my ds snacks throughout the day in little bowls that he can help himself from. His favorites are (due to shape/size?) chickpeas (and beans of any kind), olives, cheese, fruit (especially berries and whole apples).

How often are you breastfeeding? We still bf as well, and it helps not to bf before mealtimes.

Cheese strings. My little guy loves them, and they are easy to carry if they are on the go. Full fat, lots of calcium.

jenna32 - March 19th, 2009 2:41 PM

She was 23 lbs 11 oz and then she dropped to 22.5 lbs.
Sometimes we eat togethor, sometimes not, depending on alot of things i guess ( if i'm hungry, how much i have to do while she eats etc.). Yes i usually let her self feed, she usually just ends up useing her fingers for practically everything though. Once in awhile i will feed her myself. i wish i could give my dd berries or something, she isn't too fond of a lot of fruit, i've tried blueberries, apples, kiwi etc. On occassion she will eat applesauce and i think i finally got her interested in eating a little bannana.

I breastfeed, usually 3 times a day typically. Once as soon as she wakes up,once at nap time and once before bed.

Cheese strings sounds like a great idea to,thanks. I hate grocery shopping,i never know what she will eat or new ideas on what to get.

You still haven't mentioned giving her any meat or breads/starches. What is she getting from these food groups every day? Around 15 months she should be getting about 2 servings of protein (1 serving = 2 one-inch cubes of meat, etc) and 4-6 servings of starches (1 serving = 1-2 crackers, or 1/4 to 1/2 slice of bread, etc).

jenna32 - March 20th, 2009 10:16 PM

oh and yes she grew lengthwise, the doctor always says she is tall. She usually gets a little protein, not a lot maybe i'll increase it.i am not a huge meat eater, i admit it could be a problem. and you could of been right about the starches, i guess i don't count everything up. i usually give her as many cookies, crackers or a cheerio mix as snacks as she will eat, i do give her potatos quite a bit, their probably one of the main veges we eat and she usually has a slice of bread in the morning if she eats it with some kind of fruit or yogurt. she has been actually eating her food more often then before, thank god. Maybe i was making her eat too much food that she didn't like. People are saying that she feels heavier, haven't weighed her yet pluss i am sure the doctors scales more accurate.

To lose weight from month 12 to 15 months is totally NORMAL. Think about it, your child is much more active than at 12 months, hence burning more calories and if you are still breastfeeding that is better than cows milk anyday. Cows milk by nature is for calves, not humans. Breastmilk by far is best!! my 16 month old lost one pound from her 12 month checkup, which my pediatrician told me is JUST FINE! Don't fret :)

stephannpruitt - March 23rd, 2009 9:16 AM

she went from 21.5 lbs to 20.4 lbs

lmk - March 23rd, 2009 10:23 AM

Stephannpruitt,
I've never heard that it's normal. My pediatrician was concerned that my son only gained a little from 12 to 15. He went from 19lb 12oz to 20lb 8oz. She actually had me bring him in after 6 weeks after his 15month checkup to make sure he wasn't slowing down, as he dropped percentiles on the growth chart. Perhaps it depends on how big the child is to begin with...my ds is skinny, and only on the 5% growth curve for boys. If you have a girl that weighs the same or more, she'd obviously be much higher on the girls growth charts.

I do agree that breast milk is much better than cows milk, even at this age. And when pediatricians tell you that you can give your kid cow's milk, it doesn't mean that you should, it just means that it won't hurt them. My ds won't drink cow's milk anyway; I don't blame him...neither my dh nor I ever liked it!

jenna32 - March 24th, 2009 12:43 AM

so you still don't drink cows milk lmk? i like the so good soy kinds, but i hear some cases saying it is bad. for you. Maybe it is somewhat common because of picky eating habits and all the activity...seriously sometimes she can't stop moving!! She won't sit or lie down longer then a minute, even to fall asleep i have to give her the boob, that is the longest she will lay down. i wish i had a kid that would just sit and watch one t.v. show itleast once a week, that would be nice,i wonder what that is like.
