DS is almost 16 months. He refuses to eat anything except hotdogs and chicken nuggets. He wont' eat mac and cheese or anything with pasta. He won't eat veggies or fruit unless it is babyfood jars. I tried to let him dip it in ketchup, BBQ sause....nadda he just makes a HUGE mess. I don't know what to do. He just won't eat it. He used to eat it and like it....but he's just stopped for a long time. any suggestions?

OH that sounds so familiar! My ds who is now 19.5 months still has been extremely picky..... He used to eat everything we gave him up till 14.5 months, then he woke up one day and figured he was going to be difficult! My ds would live off fruit and yougart if he could! He won't eat any meat ( sometimes a chicken finger but that not often), no veggies unless it's so tiny and it's in his soup! No cheese unless it's in his lasagna and only eat pasta in lasagna or spegetti with meat sauce. He won't eat pasta of any other kind, no mac n cheese, alpha gettie, etc i tried plain with cheeze whic, butter, etc won't eat it! He also will only eat butter on his toast no jam, cheese, etc. The only kind of sandwich he will eat is a nutella one. He loves soup but no cream soups only chicken broth based ones. He will eat fries once in a blue moon and sweets of course!!! I have no idea what to feed him now a days.... I find daily his food is a repeat even though i always put something else on his plate he won't even try it! It's like he just looks at it and decideds that he won't like it! He won't dip anything either? I keep trying and everone told me it was a phase but now it's been 5 months!!!!! It hasn't gotten better and he still hasn't tried one new item...... I have no idea what i am going to feed him when he goes to daycare thissept if this doesn't get better as he can't have his nutella sandwiches due to no nut policies. SO he will have yougart, soup or fruit and that's it????? everyday!

Hmmm hotdogs chicken nuggets and ketchup... sorry but that already sounds like a Fast Food diet. My dd is 14 months and hardly eats anything. I mean she tries all sorts of things but only a few bites. She drinks plenty of milk and is happy, so I have given up worrying. But healthy eating habits do begin at some point so personally I would steer off the processed meats. Hope I didn't upset you, but just look at obesity in children today, it is a hot news topic and practically an epidemic in some countries with 40% children being over weight.

Can you wash some baby food jars and puree or cook the foods you want him to try, put them in the jars and see what happens. It is worth a try. Also, if you look you can find veggie hotdogs and nuggets. Look for Morning Star products at the grocery store. Also, the cook book, "Deceptively Delicious" has been a great resource for me. I have been able to get my 28 month old daughter to eat all kinds of veggies and sometimes she has no idea what is in the foods she is eating.

Well, we had a little success tonight....DS acutally ate fruit (diced peaches and pears) and a couple of bites of carrots...of course with a chicken nugget. No skyeblue, you did not upset me...BUT, do you have any other suggestions on what to feed him? DS loves his milk too! At this point, I'm not too worried about his weight...Poor kid is always in the 5 % for his age. His pediatrician is the one who recommended trying ketchup....didn't work. I'm interested in what you feed you LO. Thanks, mjvdec01...I will look into the cookbook.

Hi BWIND, Well my dd hardly eats any more than a few bites of any thing. I do give her veggie ceral mixed with her milk and grains too, so she drinks a lot. She eats bread, rice, some cooked veggies, oh she loves bananas. I realized that giving her hotdogs she will devour them, but i dont want to give her those often. My dh thinks its because she lacks protien, so I try to supplement her in other ways. But honesly most of her food comes in the bottle. She is skinny, but very active. She only weighed a little over 6 pounds at birth and I think know she must be about 20 or 21 pounds...I would stay away from Ketchup, it is all sugar and I would think it just creates a sweet tooth. I think to add ketchup to veggies or whatever is really a bad idea. Good luck!!

We have trouble getting our 2.5 year old DD to eat at times - my son who is 17 months is the opposite will eat anything in sight plus everyone else's. DH is French (I'm English) and loves to cook fresh food - meat and vegetables etc but my DD isn't overly keen on it. Its often a case of keep trying different things, even things they previously refused. Mine like fishcakes and baked beans, beans on toast, spaghetti on toast, chicken and pasta bake and they both loves sausages and mash. They also both love peas and runner beans - but cut up up into big bits and baby carrots again whole - they find it fun to handle them. Both mine love fromage frais/Petit Filous and pears. They also both love the cheese esp. ones they can hold themselves. My DS is crazy about bread to the point of finding feeding the ducks a bit traumatising! Sometimes saying 'mmm' or pretending your eating it yourself seems to help too. With my DD I say if you don't want it can DS have then she often wants it. LOL. Hope you find something they like.

iona - June 13th, 2008 3:41 AM

BWINd, I hope I misunderstood you... Did you say that your doc recommended to put ketchup on things they dont like to eat like veggies...?

lin7604 - June 13th, 2008 11:19 AM

my ped also suggested that to me with my son, as he won't eat any. She said ketchup or ranch dressing, etc.

BWIND - June 13th, 2008 12:15 PM

No, you didn't misunderstand me...she said try dipping sauces. He hates it....wouldn't even try the ketchup...probably a good thing. He is very reluctant to try anything...He just shakes his head no at me. He did eat a grilled cheese sandwich yesterday, so I'm thinking....maybe I could put some other things in it...like turkey....maybe if I'm lucky, I can hide a few green beans in it. HAHA! From everyone I talked to they said not to worry to much about it. I know my mom said I lived on hotdogs forever. They just seem gross to me:)

Skyeblue - June 13th, 2008 2:43 PM

BWIND, I must say (and I hope you do not take offense)...to advise to put ketchup on ANYTHING is so fricking unhealthy and disgusting. Your doc is a quack. Change to a more healthy natural doc. Ketchup has as much sugar as ice cream, so could imagine saying..."put ice cream on anything you don't like." Some "professionals" so stupid!!!!

cubbie - June 14th, 2008 3:25 PM

Skyblue - just to let you know that ice-cream is not a bad option! I have been advised my many drs that when they lose appitite because they are teething or they are sick (but not from a stomach bug - because then it's best to avoid dairy) to give ice cream as it is rich in calcium and calories. But I'm not suggesting that for a cure for picky eaters.

apple - June 29th, 2008 12:26 AM

my son is almost 14 months and he has always been a picky eater. At first when i breastfed he would not take a bottle to save is own life, then he started biting me so we switched (7 months) which went easier than we thought but still tough. So when he went to just formula he would no longer eat the rice cereal or really anything at all, he only wanted formula (he's allergic to anything dairy) and to this day is huge on liquids. But still for the longest time he would not eat anything, it didn't really worry me much because he was still gaining weight and he' pretty big for his age. Then one day it was like a light switched on and he just started eating food. He was still picky about what you gave him but it's just been getting better from there. Now he'll pretty much eat anything, and he still has his off days. So just hang in there, your child may always be a picky eater, but he will not starve himself.

countrymom401 - June 30th, 2008 11:34 AM

My lo loves grilled cheese sandwiches with ham and a little little bit of onion cut real thin in them. He is 16 months and is picky too. But he does love fruit almost all fruit. He will not touch bananas though. He loves soup with lots of crackers but won't eat it without. Hr doesn't much care for meat but he also likes hotdogs and chicken. How is he for breakfast? Does he eat cereal? That is good for any meal. My lo loves cheerios with milk. If he like hot dogs so much try the lower sodium ones or even turkey ones. Even try the odd fish stick and see if he likes them too. My lo loves salmon. Does he eat bacon? My lo loves bacon and hash browns he won't eat eggs though. Not At all.. Hot dogs and beans is good too. I use maple beans and he eats it right up. Just try to sneak as much good stuff in as you can. He will be fine.. Good luck :)

Twinkie - July 1st, 2008 1:55 PM

My son is almost 22 months and has gone on a food strike sort of .. things he loved he won't touch now. But, I started making him smoothies with fruit, veggies, yogurt, milk, and peanut butter, and he sucks these down through a straw with no problem. At least he gets a lot of nutrients this way, so maybe something to try?

Twinkie - July 1st, 2008 1:57 PM

also, I forgot to add he loves muffins, so I have been making him special ones full of grated veggies and sweetened only a bit with honey, and he gobbles those up, too. He seems to have texture issues with food, but if I can get things disguised in things he stil does eat, then he goes for it. HTH!

lin7604 - July 1st, 2008 2:58 PM

can you share you muffin recipes? please and thanks! I make reg muffine recipes with banana's, carrots, etc but they still have lots of sugar in them. i would love to try one with honey adn see how he does with it.
