My 14 month old DS has become really constipated over the last 2-3 weeks. I think maybe becuase his diet has changed---he's eating a lot more finger foods that are bread based, like goldfish and crackers, grahm crackers, chicken nuggets, etc. Im pretty sure this is what is causing this, but he refuses baby food most of the time and eats some table food, but he likes to feed himself. I had to use a fleet supository on him today and the poo was horrible. Ive tried upping his juice intake and it dosnt seem to be helping. Any ideas for me? I cant stand to see my lil guy suffer with this anymore----its happening every 3 days! No poopie---then horrible constipation. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am in the same boat as you are. My 14 month old dd is constipated too and I do think it is because the change in diet. I have called the dr. and she said to give her diluted prune juice, water lots of fruit (pears, peaches...) She used to do #2 almost daily but now it is every other 2 or 3 days. My 3 yrs old ds was very constipated but I have given him prune juice for the past year and he is much more regular. When he was a toddler I had to him baby suppositories. I know how you feel and so far prune juice is my only remedy.

I agree with prune juice. Also try spinach. Tristan always has looser poop when he eats spinach..

You could consult with your doctor first, but my dd has been using Miralax since she was around 2. It used to be by prescription only, but now you can buy it OTC. It doesn't make them "go", it just makes it soft so it doesn't hurt when they finally do. I'm not sure on the age requirement though.

even with the introduction of more "table food" type foods, why not still keep on with baby food fruits? will your baby reject that? my 15 month old dd will still happily eat a jar of baby fruit (puree) in her cereal each morning or even plain. Mandarin oranges? Hummus? those seem to make my dd poo. Yogurt should make him go too, b/c of the probiotic cultures. We havent really had a problem with constipation b/c my dd is not into pasta or bread at this point, even thought she likes crackers/cheerios/goldfish. Its weird, her aversion to pasta products and bread! She is still eating mostly soft mushy food, she only has her front teeth and seems to be a lazy chewer! (apparently I was on baby food for a looooong time, and my dh got his teeth in really late, so maybe this combo has shown up in our dd!)

and OMG, try prunes. when dd eats this, she'll poo 4x a day!

when my dd was about a few months to almost 2 she had consitpation and my grandma said to use 1 teaspoon of Karo surup in her bottle it worked very well with her and helped get rid of the problem. plus juices worked a little but was never enough for her. Good Luck :-)

Yes those finds are binding him up so I would go easy on those cookies, breads and crackers. For maintenance give him lots of fruits and veggies. Pears, prunes, squash, avocado, green beans, those do it for my DD. I have also used prune juice and small cut up prunes. HTH
