I am wondering how common/possible it is to have a twin pregnancy go undetected through all the standard prenatal visits and the 20 week u/s??? I'm not looking for opinions so much as ACTUAL experiences. So if you or someone you know had this happen... Or if you've had twins, when/how did you find out???

The only person I know to have had surprise twins was the mother of 2 girlfriends (twin sisters) of mine when I was a kid. They were born over 30 years ago and their mom didn't have any ultrasounds. I will say that mine were visible at 6 weeks and I can't imagine how anyone could miss twins at 20 weeks. By that time my babies were getting so big that it was hard to get a picture of one of them without the other's body parts being in the picture.

NOPE. If you ever see a 20 week u/s with twins, you will see so many arms and legs, you will think there are more than just the 2. The tech would have to be completely high to miss it. I have known women that didn't know until their 20 week u/s because it was their first u/s and I have known women that found out earlier after a very early u/s showed just one baby. But never have I heard a 20 week u/s missing a twin. If it does happen, it is very, very rare.

MIne weren't found until 20 weeks. I am a member of a several twin organizations and I have never heard of twins being missed at the 20 wk u/s. I also talked to a sonographer and she said that in the 20 years at her clinic it has never happened.I found stats on another board that it happens less than 1% of the time. AS samehere said it is next to impossible as there are limbs, cords, sacs everywhere.
